Well, I think its come to this - giving up Peanut Butter (and Peanuts as well).

I have been told by MANY sources that as a T1D I should have no problems with peanuts affecting my blood sugar since they are so low carb, and so low GI.
I recently went on a camping trip and bought a 2kg bag of peanuts (it was on sale lol) and figured i could sit around all weekend and snack on peanuts. So i did.
I continued to do this even after returning home - because i obviously cannot eat 2kg of peanuts in a weekend lol

I noticed that i can sit down, and spend at least an hour, maybe 2 eating peanuts - like peanuts until my stomach hurts.. and ya know what?
it sent my blood sugars skyrocketing!
The worst part about peanuts i have found is that once my sugars shot up, they stayed up for around 8 hours...

It has happened a couple nights now, where i will eat nothing but peanuts when i get home from work (i know not healthy, but i had to make sure it was the peanuts) and i find that on a completely empty stomach, if i fill up on peanuts my sugars will go up at least 5mmol/l and stay there until i wake up the next morning.
I pump correction after correction into my body all evening and even at night... i up basal rate 20% for that entire 8 hours, and still NOTHING.

Peanuts GREATLY affect me as a diabetic.

I am sure I were to just eat a small amount they would stabilize my BS at a significantly lower number for that 8 hours, but a peanut binge is disastrous!

I just wanted to get the word out : peanuts and peanut butter WILL raise your sugars. Do not believe any myth about 'lowering' your blood sugar. They have carbs, they are low GI and if you eat enough them they will be your worst nightmare!

Peanuts contain carbs - in raw form about 16g per 100g, plus 28 grammes of protein and are 50% fat.

If you eat them in small quantities then they have little effect. If you eat them in large volumes it's a bit like eating pizza...

Wimp.

OK, on a more serious note... I find that certain foods (grains esp wheat, milk and some fruit) send my bg ridiculously high. Far out of proportion to the carb g they contain.

I have slowly come to the conclusion that it is food intolerances.

Maybe you should check out your reaction to other nuts... ground nuts... er, are there other ground nuts?

Maybe just check out all nuts - tree and ground.

yes I love peanuts and eat large amounts. When I eat a lot I find the protein continues to be converted for hours and hours so you probably had the double whammy of the extra carbs you didn't realise you had and then the protein...

@Brunneria - A peanut is not actually a nut, it is technically a Legume. The same family as beans and lentils. I have never had any issues with eating peanuts the first 29 years of my life without diabetes lol So i don't think i have any intolerance to them or any other nut. .

@tim2000s - Its exactly like eating pizza. Its awful! Sitting down with a bag of peanuts is no longer looked forward to at ballgames, or camping, or at a bbq or pub etc. lol

And the 50g of fat per 100g extending the process as well, for a little more fun!

Triple whammy it seems.. smh.

I tried googling peanuts and diabetes afterwards and I seem to find MANY sites that say eating peanuts will instantly LOWER your blood sugar! After searching around it seems thats what the internet will tell a diabetic if they ever google it themselves. This seams very dangerous lol I was also told by my doctor when i was diagnosed that i didnt have to bolus for peanuts because they had so much fat and fiber...

and to be honest @Brunneria that first night i sat down on the couch with goal to eat the entire remainder of that 2kg bag lol I filled a large cooking pot with shells and after about 3 hours just felt sick.. and then noticed my sugars were flat at 11.5.. and stayed at 11.5 for at least 8 hours even with constant bolusing and temp basals.

That is the protein. When I have lots I always sit at a very stable 5.4 it is very disconcerting. My longest after a large meatfest at a brazilian restaurant the previous evening was until 1130 the next morning. First time I saw it was very disconcerting.

Keep the quantity down @Diamattic and it shouldn't be a problem, but don't forget you can still bolus for the peanuts.

lol i know i can always eat less, but they are so good!

From now on though, i will bolus for sure, and certainly eat much less.

@Andrew Colvin - I wish i was at a stable 5.4!
Yeah I'm luckily a sorted out T2

As your now on a pump you can extend the bolus to allow for any slow bg rise, but yes everything in moderation comes to mind..................:)

I did a post ref peanuts and I have exactly the same prob as you.... Even with 90g..... (2kg would have me unconscious and in DKA!!!)

Off my snack list now!!! Walnuts etc do not have this effect at all.

I would have to roll with you on this @Diamattic . I never thought peanuts or peanut butter for that matter had little affect on BS levels...
I have used em as a supplement for hypo treatment in the past.. ;)

I think if used properly peanuts/butter can be a very strong ally. In a hypo situation a glass of OJ and small spoonful of PB could be perfect. The problem i find is after the small spoon, i have about 5-10 more lol

The funny thing for me with PB in a hypo situation it don't have that moorish effect on me.. But, I remember going low at a social gathering years ago & polishing a large bowl of peanuts..:D

Try googling 'peanuts and aflatoxin' - maybe it's the mould that makes you feel weird? I'd be very nervous about eating any food that caused cravings to consume more.
