So okay. Since I was diagnosed in November controlling my diet has become really hard.

When I was first diagnosed and for a few month after - I didn't touch anything with sugar (even at christmas). I didn't want to get into a bad cycle. But in February I started staying at my aunties on the weekends. And I have really badly slipped. As much as I still don't touch full fat soft drinks (like coke lemonade as I'm sure they were the major cause of me becoming diabetic) I am back to eating chocolate. To the point where I am feeling very torn. I know I need to give them up but they are a sort of comfort for me. Plus my auntie and her family are always eating cakes and chocolate and sugary things.

I am still losing weight and I am keeping an eye on my blood sugars which range between about 6-10mmol give or take an mmol.

Can anyone offer any advice to help me get back on track? I don't want to be put on insulin and that is my fear if i don't sort this

Thanks

Doxii

Hi Doxii, welcome and well done for getting this far. Well there's your incentive right there - it's hard but if that's your aim then only you can make it happen (with whatever advice and support from here of course). You've lost weight which is good, but your BGs are still a bit high, you shouldn't be hitting 10s. What were you when diagnosed?

Apart from chocolate and sugary things you should be cutting back on carbs, ideally no (or very little) bread, pasta, rice, potatoes. Do that and your BGs will fall. Have a look at www.dietdoctor.com/lchf.

Good luck, and keep asking questions on here.

Hi Sanguine, Thanks for answering.

When I was diagnosed my blood sugar was about 18mmol after a fasting blood test. I've also lost about 3 stone since November. I believe most of that was cutting out the full fat coke - I could drink a pack of 6 cans in a day. Now I don't go anywhere near it. I still eat bread and potatoes. Rice and Pasta are easy to avoid. Bread I only really eat at lunch times. Potatoes are part of my evening meal nearly every day.

I've been scared to go and get my blood tested by the doctor because I don't want to be put on insulin and i really don't want to be shouted at... which I know he would.

I need to sort myself out first!

@Doxii carbs are addictive, the more carbs you eat the more carbs you want
don't be so hard on yourself and self control is hard to master, but 2 days a week at your aunties is good practice
try the 90% chocolate blocks, I'm satisfied with 4 or one line [yes that was an addict joke]
raw cooking cocoa powder is zero carb and make a yummy cream/water hot chocolate.

I should get yourself a blood glucose meter (Codefree is cheap on Amazon). It will give you a good idea of what to expect at the doctors, and also what chocolate and carby stuff does to you...

Much better than being stressed because you don't know.

@ Jack412 - Carbs are very addictive. I find at certain times in the month that the want for them is much more. But at the moment I just seem to want them all the time. I'm going to my aunties again tomorrow and I've asked her not to have as many sweet things in the house. That way the access is more limited or if it's meant for someone I won't touch it.

I think I am going to start looking into this LCHF diet!

@Brunneria - I did buy myself an iBGstar BG meter. But I'm a real wuss when it comes to making myself bleed. I have to psych myself up for it. Lol.

It sounds like you are at least trying and are aware of what you need to do. Try to set yourself a daily carb limit of, say, 150 gm/day. I have 85% Dark chocolate which is low in carbs and you do get used to the different flavour. Green & Blacks is the smoothest.

@Doxii I was 115kg or 255lb, or 18st...107kg this week
I was THE carb addict, I went Low carb cold turkey for 2 months, cut all grain, grain product, any sugar and potato with the help of the forum
check my signature below, normal bloods now and a new lease on life and best of all I'm not a prisoner of carbs, I dont miss them, I don't get starving hungry

If it's any help, I found with LCHF that the desire for carbs goes quite quickly (a week or two). I never thought I would be able to give up bread for instance, but I don't feel I want any at all now. Still have the occasional slice of toast with my breakfast eggs, but that's more as a treat than a need.

I am a Carb addict!!!!! There I've said it.

I do Very low carb, its the only way for me. I make my own ice cream, bounty bars, rocky road, peanut butter brownies, bread etc. Its the only way I can stay on the wagon. I gave in a while back to a piece of chocolate cake...shop bought....it was the beginning of a downward spiral I just couldn't stop!!! But a couple of weeks later I just sat down and said to myself 'No More' Out went the remaining biscuits and **** that I shouldn't have bought in the first place, I gave them away. Then I stocked up on ingrediants and got cooking and freezing. I find it easier to stay on track if I have a nibble handy. I love sainsburys sugarfree marshmallows.

Oh and just to say after a couple of days struggling with the craving withdrawals it gets so much easier.

I am a low GI medium carb .....and low fat diet .....it is what works for me ...

Now chocolate , I love green and blacks ...anything 70% and over ....it is a good number to start with when changing over chocolate eating habits ....

Surely if you take the sugar out of a marshmallow, it becomes a figment of your imagination. How do they even DO that?? I feel a trip to Sainsburys coming on . :)
