Okay , I'm going to vent here in the hope someone can put my mind at ease. I was diagnosed as type one just over 7 years ago. I had lost about 4 stone in 3 months , hba1c was 171 and was admitted to hospital without DKA but had a sugar level of 46.6 at the time. Ive been to see my DSN at the hospital today (I detest her at the best of times) but she even suggested today that I might actually be type 2 , as I seem to take a LOT of Lantus (I'm talking of 60 units a day) but can they really of been wrong for nearly 8 years about my condition ? I'm scared to death right now , I don't know what to think , and with my healthcare being so blimming **** I'm ready to scream , how many 21 year olds , of normal/a little extra weight with no family history get type 2 ? It's near on impossible isn't it ?

I think you're right. Crazy idea.

If it makes you feel any better I take 74u of levimir a day and I'm definitely type 1. Have been since I was five ;)

I can appreciate you being frustrated. I think I would be too, but does it really matter which label you have; T1 or T2? Surely the treatment is tailored to you and your body's needs. Would being T2 change your treatment at all?

As a fairly new T2, I may completely misunderstand the implications.

I think I'm just more peed at the fact I've gone on for 8 years doing my own research ect in to type one , I'm actually fighting for an insulin pump , put so much hard work in to it too

You have put my mind at ease , can I ask you about body size ? I'm a little overweight and that's because my diets bad , but I think she has it in her head because I'm a bigger build I'm type 2 , not that because I'm bigger I need more insulin

I'm overweight too. Not huge but I have about a stone to lose. My insulin has gone up as my weight has so I put it down to that, and I was in a car accident and find it difficult to exercise as much as I used to.

Glad it put your mind at ease :)

Can you not ask to see someone else (more competent ) ? Like a doctor or a consultant? I would and explain my concerns. Say you would like to be assessed. Just a thought?

I'm now a little calmer than yesterday , I think I've been lucky , when I was diagnosed I wasn't in DKA , and have only really been admitted with a medium amount of ketones , am I just lucky , or is this why she thinks I might be type 2 ?

Not sure. I've never been in DKA, my mom recognised my symptoms before it got that far and touch wood it's never happened to me.

If I were you I'd ask for a second opinion on this.

Ask for a C-Peptide test (if you haven't had one before) that will show whether your body is producing insulin or not. If not you are Type 1.

The other thing I'd recommend is to ask for Metformin which helps with insulin sensitivity.

Also perhaps try changing from Lantus to Levemir; it is not uncommon for people to have problems with Lantus.

Lastly, the best thing you can do to bring down insulin doses is to low-carb.

I hope you can get on the next DAFNE course. Re: levemir, I was put on this approx 6 weeks of being diagnosed 5 years ago and was taking 2X60 units of levemir a day/split dose...Started having bad side effects so I was put on lantus but within weeks I was having BAD side effects. As I said before lantus and maybe levemir isn't right for you. To be honest I'd consider you being type 1 so ask the DSN to put you on DAFNE.ASAP.

Thanks Nigel , I have done DAPHNE (Sorry should of said that) I've been on both Lantus and Insuman Basal , nothing seems to work , what are you currently taking as a background insulin?

What are your BG levels running at?

Are you still concerned at the amount of insulin you are taking?
