I was diagnosed prediabetic last October with an HbA1c of 43 and told to return in 12 months.

I see Bluetit1802 has explained the significance of fasting. I want to achieve the best result I possibly can so as to have a reason to continue to refuse Statins. If my result is better than last time when I didn’t fast I can say, look my numbers are improving no need for Statins just yet!

Interestingly you say Bluetit that the trigs will be higher depending on how much fat you have just eaten. Diabetics are encouraged to eat low carb and high fat yet if that raises the trig level it would have an adverse effect on the result wouldn't it? Does a cholesterol test reflect what you have recently eaten or is it like the HbA1c and a longer viewpoint?

Trigs aren't permanent features. They are a type of fat that are made by our bodies when we eat. The calories that we eat that are not immediately needed for energy are converted into triglycerides, which are moved through our blood stream to the fat cells where they are stored for future use and are no longer in our blood stream. As soon as we need more energy our hormones release the trigs which are then used for energy and are gone. If we haven't eaten for 12 hours or so ideally there should be very few of them around in the blood stream. If we have eaten there is likely to be a lot more as they are in the blood stream being carried to the fat cells and doing the job they were made to do. That is putting it all very simply - it is more complicated than that, of course!

Our cholesterol and lipids change continually. The blood test is a snapshot of what they are at the time of the test, a bit like our glucose meter tests. The test only reflects that. 10 minutes later and it could all be different.
