So just over 2 years ago I was diagnosed with late onset type 1 diabetes. (Never posted on this site so hopefully i can ask here!)
My HbA1C is currently 59 (highest it's ever been, my fault entirely for not being 100% with testing and such!)

What I'm confused about is the IA2 / GAD, I know they're some sort of antibodies right? but, what do they mean?

I am IA2 postitive, GAD negative. I am now to have a Zn8 test this week!

IA2 is Islet Cell Autoantibodies, and is one of the indicators that the body is attacking the islet cells. GAD is Glutamic Acid Decarboxylase Autoantibodies. which are an indication of an immune system attack. ZnT8 is an islet beta-cell secretory granule membrane protein, and a Zn8 Autoantibody is another indicator of an immune attack on the beta cells.

Details of the overlap can be found in this report: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19808923

That's why they are doing all these tests - if you have these antibodies, they indicate type 1 diabetes. That's all really!
