Mine is mostly hormonally affected. I could have nothing but water for a couple of days before I'm due on and during my period and still have Diarrhoea. Large amounts of dairy and some animal fats can also set it off in my case,

So yesterday I was diagnosed with IBS....I asked my Doctor what I should eat and what I should avoid....and well she didn't really know! So can anyone help please???
Hi Nicola,

This is a good site and explains a lot about IBS and how the diet is only part of the problem and also how individual people respond differently to different foods.

I thought this was particularly pertinent to you knowing how your family situation has affected you and the pain you have been experiencing with sciatica. These are two stressors that we know about.

There are a variety of factors that affect IBS, and diet is just one of these. If other factors, such as stressors or hormonal changes, are more active on a particular day, then dietary triggers are more likely to push your symptoms "over the edge."

Oooo okay I will look into that thanks :) x

I have had IBS for years and I have come a long way in keeping it in check without meds now. It's about diet and exercise. Exercise and drinking water seems to keep things moving when constipated, as does a good curry! I find that eating raw foods encourage spasms though I don't get them very often these days.

My IBS caused a terrible bloating and sense of fullness which was uncomfortable. Two drugs helped me in the old days...domperidone and a wonderful OTC remedy called Colpermin. The latter is just slow release peppermint really but it does wonders for keeping you clear of wind and those spasms.

I had to learn slowly which foods to avoid and which were fine and I am sure it might be a personal thing in this respect. I ate grains and it didn't seem to really affect me. Lots of fresh foods helped a lot as did a bio yoghurt every day. Activia seemed to really help but I have had to stop that now because of the sugar. Don't forget the natural teas too like peppermint, ginger and fennel.

After my daughter stopped taking Mebeverine she was put on Fibro gel.
Is it possible for mebevrine to make you worse? I didn't have the cramps as such but diarhea was very bad just now :( TMI I know but I haven't had it like that before! x

Oh don't worry about bodily functions Nicola it happens to all of us at some timeso_O. Have you looked at the PIL (patient information leaflet) for the side effects? it could be that, but IBS can cause diarrhoea . My daughter suffers with this at times, I have noticed that she doesn't mention it so much now, I find things that I can't even wash, but she's a teenager now, bless her and must be finding it a bit difficult sometimes <3
Did you manage to find an IBS support forum ?
Just keep an eye on it and if you are worried, see your GP again ,or ( phone consultation) or a surgery nurse. Take care x
