Hi, I suffer with Ostearthitis in my hip and degenerative spine disease. I am also Type 2 Diabetic ( Diet Controlled) Along with other painkilling Medication, I have been prescribed Ibuptofen. I read that this is not suitable for diabetics, so wonder if anyone here has experience with Ibuprofen. Any feedback gratefully received. :)

I suffer from Arthrosis, and both hips and knees should be replaced but I don't want to go through another hip replacement as one failed. I take 600 mgs of Ibubrofen together with 1g of paracetamol. I take these twice a day and they also help the neuropathy in my arms. I change every month or so for a week as they tend to exacerbate my asthma. But in general, nothing seems to help other than these. I hope this helps. I couldn't get around without them.

Yes katyk, that does help a lot. It gets confusing. I guess if I don't take too often, when in my worst pain ( which I am today) I will feel more relaxed. Thanks so much xx

My orthopaedic doctor advised me not to take ibuprofen, partly due to my diabetes but also because I am taking other medicines that strain the kidneys

Thanks for your reply, it all helps. I have high blood pressure also, so try to only take it on days when the pain is unbearable. Thank you so much for getting back. :)

I take ibuprofen sparingly as needed. I mostly take codeine regularly. I take mersyndol every night which has the paracetamol/codeine/doxylamine succinate. My gastroenterologist told me that it is the least harmful painkiller i can take. But my treatment overall is under review and my meds could well change. But the current meds I'm on do not control my symptoms that well. Docs know this and that's why I'm seeing a neurologist soon to see if he can identify any other issue and particularly to help with my medication mix to get it right which includes pain meds. But ibuprofen and other anti-inflammatories for me are sometimes needed as other painkillers don't work too well on nerve pain. I also have celebrex for nerve pain but I rarely use it as it has a list of side effects too. I really don't like taking too many drugs and my doc tries to keep me on minimal meds. I've not heard about ibuprofen being unsuitable for diabetics. Although I can see long term use of it wouldn't be a good idea.

Thanks Mep, sounds like you are having a rough time. Thanks for your input. Like you I try to take it at the most intense. I am also suffering with Shingles , so feeling wiped out. Thanks again for your reply Mep :)

Thanks again Katyk, it does help hearing from others experiences x
Tramadol is now a controlled drug when I pick mine up you have to sign twice on your prescription

Thanks for your reply SweetLucie. I really appreciate your input to my query :).
Tramadol now a controlled drug I have to sign my prescription twice never understand this as I've been on dihyrocodeine which I have found much stronger to the extent of only using it very sparingly once a year on average and only after waiting six hours to get Paracetamol & Tramadol out of the system

Ibuprofen (Advil)
I am a 76 years old man . I have been put on Metformin two weeks ago for borderline hyperglycemia ( 7.5 fasting , 8.5-9.0 2 hrs after meal), even though I eat moderately ( no junk/ canned food, little refined sugar, mostly milk, cheese, oatmeals, eggs, vegetables..) and I am an exercise buff ( 76 years old, gym, swimming, windsurfing, treadmill..).

This morning I was feeling a slight back pain when I woke up, possibly because I resumed the treadmill after almost 3 weeks and the muscles in the back were a bit tight. I took two Advils and shortly after I started feeling a bit light-headed, almost dizzy. I took my blood pressure and I found it unusually low: 94/60. It was 115/64 2 hrs earlier, before I took Advil.!!!

I do take Advil sometimes, very rarely and never had problems! I wonder if this can be due to an interaction with Metformin.

Any comments on this?

On the positive side: when I resumed the gym yesterday after 2 weeks of bad flue ( fever, Tamiflu, etc) to my surprise I felt even more energetic on the treadmill than ever before starting Metformin and even before I got the flue!

When I got back, I tested my blood sugar before supper: 6.2 ! Wow!Pleasantly surprised!

Even better, although not perfect, when I woke up this morning my fasting b.s. was 6.8 !
Could it be that, even though my glycemia was only moderately above the norm , the fact of improving it with with Metformin results in more energy and better physical performance, even after only one week? Rationally, I find this hard to believe, yet this is exactly how I felt!Or, may be the usual..placebo effect?

May be a doctor will downplay this as too anecdotal to have any scientific foundation, but the medical establishment is conservative by nature and sometimes they miss out relevant facts.. Perhaps necessarily so, in order to counter the many unscientific quackeries advanced by people ( even doctors, like the famed Dr OZ...) who are more interested in peddling their ware and making money than in scientific truth.

Maybe somebody can comment on all this: can Ibuprofen excessively lower blood pressure, perhaps in synergism with Metformin ? Can an improved glycemia through Metformin, ( 500 mg, 2 half doses daily) result in better endurance and physical performance even only after one week ?

I'll bring this up with my doctor, but in the meantime, I'd like to have comments..

Thanks
Ittiandro

P.S. At the rime of posting, my pressure is back to 112/66, two hours after taking Ibuprofen.. This lends support to my belief that it was Ibuprofen that caused the blood pressure drop in conjunction with Metformin, but I am open to comments/disagreements.

Thanks

Ittiandro

I'm a t1 and use it all the time on my monthly and headaches best drug ever

its not recommended because it increase the risk of heart attacks. i was stopped from using it. apart from very short periods its the long term use thats the issue. plus for diabetes it puts extra stress on the kidneys. ibpufen aspirin and a anti platelet med produced some amazing bruises. i tripped up in november, and banged my front i ended up with a bruise stretching all over my front must have been a 18 inches wide and a foot high.

I was taken off Ibrufen as it can increase the risk of heart attacks. I have Atrial Fibrillation for which I take meds for. Far better to use Panadol Osteo which will give you 8 hrs relief.

Or just take 3 x 200 mg tablets of paracetamol at a time. That is if you don't mind risking a paracetamol overdose if you get it wrong.
