Hi All
Been doing the intermittent fasting for around 3 weeks . I am a T2 and had no meds for 11 years however I let the guard down a little and had an hba1c recently of 6.4. I have noticed my BS in the morning is higher since the IT with 19 and 5 ( eating) around 7 most mornings but early to mid 6s during the day . I am really liking the energy and body re shape of IT but concerned about the morning readings?

Hi

Fasting readings generally reflect what your liver thinks is "normal" currently for you. Our livers spend a lot of time adjusting glucose levels in response to many things. The problem is that livers can be slow learners and take some time getting used to lower BG levels not being something that needs fixing.

My liver took about six months to adjust, and my morning readings were the very last to come down - I'd had a couple of normal HbA1c results but morning readings stayed relatively high. They didn't reflect anything I had any control over, yes they did eventually fall, but only after months. Using a CGM showed very clearly that my BG was up and down from about 4am, while I was asleep, but what that was in response to was and is a bit of a puzzle.

My long-term solution was to (almost) stop taking morning readings, and that was a liberation. These days I do a week of morning readings once a year just as a check. Otherwise I don't bother.

Thanks for a really helpful reply. I am normally around 7 on awakening since fasting and have deffo been over testing . I’m switching my daily fasting to eat at noon and 5pm . Daily food fish broccoli Avacado yogurt few oatcakes occasional pasta chicken eggs etc .
During day after plenty of walking 10k steps on average I’m around 6.3 on testing so going to let this sort itself out and not stress. The key thing is I’m feeling great since fasting.

Update -

Ok I had a blood sugar of 7 or 7+ in the mornings when doing a 10 hour fast . I am a diet contolled diabetic / pre diabetic I was mid 6s during the day. This all started when I became an omad on my fasting diet. The over 7s in the morning were concerning me . Anyway I can report to you that I have changed my fasting now to lunch at 1.30pm and diner at 6.30-7pm rather than omad and after 72 hours of this new eating plan I was after a 10 hour fast I can report a 7.30am fasting blood sugar of 5.9.

Good stuff. You have to find what works for you. Have you experimented with dropping the oatcakes and pasta etc for a couple of days? Both high carb items, and can have disproportionate BG effects.

The oatcakes are tough to drop as they make things easy . I don’t want to go on the pasties and choc .
