Illnesses and type two diabetes

Hi

I was diagnosed about a year ago. Particularly, that unlike most type two diabetics I am in my early 30's which got me down to say the least. Since being diagnosed, I have been trying to figure out the whys and the wherefores. I have been trying to get a straight answer, because I have type two diabetes, does it mean that my immune system is now affected?

Will It be harder to fight off colds and other illnesses like the flu, what if I get a cut does it take longer to heal?

Also because I smoke (I quit before I was diagnosed, but the stress of being diagnosed got me started again) would that further stress my immune system.

Another question is overexertion, if overdo it physically and mentally, can that complicate my diabetes further. I do have a stressful job and sometimes I do overexert myself.

Also, I would like to know, how many people with type two diabetes get colds which last longer than normal and get any further complications as a result of getting a cold or flu etc.

I know the list is quite large but I am so confused, and there are not many people who I know who have type 2 diabetes.

I just want an answer which can help

Thank you for your assistance in this matter

Hi. The key to all of this is blood sugar level. Once your blood sugar is down into the non-diabetic range then in many ways your body becomes normal with regard to illnesses, healing and so on. It's the excess glucose in the blood that can cause it to become stickier and also encourage bacterial growth in cuts. Illness and stress will cause blood sugar level to increase but that happens with both diabetics and non-diabetics. As far as I know having diabetes itself does not affect the immune system so just get you blood sugar under control and keep it there and you can have a normal life. You know you should give up smoking don't you

thanks for the info,

So control is the key here. I think the smoking prolongs illnesses, so I have already made the decision to quit (again) I just do not want to be always worried.

Thanks very much
