Hey guys! I am 9 +3 weeks pregnant and have know since being 5 weeks, very very exciting! I am checking my blood regularly and seeing my Dsn every week they have been fab have also had 2 scans and seen my little baby's heartbeat again very very exciting!!! Just wanted to know in your first trimester did anyone have high blood sugars in the morning?! I feel my insulin isn't as quick acting as it was before I was pregnant and am giving myself much more insulin than I'm use too? X

Hi there @Finley02
welcome to the forum :)
sorry I can 't help specifically with your query but I am tagging some lovely ladies that should be able to offer some support.

@tigger , @azure , @Mrsass . @1Sarah1 , @jade88

all the best !!

Firstly congratulations! I am currently 19 weeks pregnant, I would say from weeks 6-12 I had the same as you, would get very big spikes after meals especially, fasting levels were ok but reacted really quickly to any food at all. This may well be due to the vast amount of hormones running through your system at the moment.
Then around week 12 my insulin needs dropped dramatically, and I started having a lot of hypos. I think for other people, they had the hypos kick in earlier, and then get much higher insulin requirements during second trimester, which hasn't happened for me yet. Basically I think it's fair to say that everyone has different experiences during pregnancy, and your insulin needs can change very quickly and dramatically.

The most important thing is to test regularly, and if a pattern starts to emerge work with your DSN on making changes. Your needs will change a lot both ways over the next 8 months, so just react as best you can.

Are you on a pump? I started on one during week 13 and it's made such a difference to managing all the changes.

I had some highs early on, but then lots of lows, which are very common in the first trimester. Be prepared for them even though you have highs at the moment!

Have you set an alarm to get up in the night and test to see when you're going high?

And congratulations :)

Congratulations! I second azure's suggestion of testing at night as it is possible that it's a reaction to hypoing in your sleep. My experience was more like azure's than artemis at this stage.

Ah thank you guys! Very exciting, I have never had so much insulin! I am testing of the night..... I could go to bed on 5.4 drop to 4.7 then around 2am I rise to 10.7! Never experience t before as at those readings I would normally drop! My fingers are killing where I am testing so much lol - it will all be worth it just frustrating when I am normally in control now I feel like I'm not lol xx

Oh sorry @ArtemisBow I am not on a pump. I have thought about it recently just reluctant to change as I have been been a diabetic since the age of 8 and am now 24 and only ever been on insulin hehe

Hello @Finley02

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

Are you in regular contact with your Dsn? Mention this rise in the morning to your nurse as I suffered terribly with dawn phenomenon when pregnant ( I have this to an extent anyway) your sugars rise in the early hours usually in preparation, mine tend to do this from 3/4am! I had one pregnancy on insulin pens and I struggled with this. My insulin regime was completely flipped on its head! Just take things step by step as they will change constantly all the way through X X

Hello @Sarahkylie88,

Thank you very much, it's so exciting.

Yes I am in regular contact, I see her every week, which is fab. She has suggested upping my basal dose, but just feel that what ever dosage I am doing my body is not reacting as quickly as it use too! I wake up on and around 10/12 although this morning was 7.7 so was partying this morning lol

Xx

Hi @Finley02 congratulations! I had some highs very early on but then constant lows from 6w to around 21w (might have been partly to do with I couldn't keep anything down) I'm now 23w and my insulin needs have increased a lot! Would it be worth testing at say midnight, I'm thinking maybe you go to bed on 5.4 then drop low n get a sugar dump that's then putting you high when you test at 2? Are you giving yourself a correction when you get the higher reading? Is it then back to normal by morning? Sorry feel like I'm drilling you with questions

I guess everyone is so different, I'm feeling bloody knackered already lol. Yes I see what your saying, I'm so tired I didn't wake up on my alarm last night I was 13 this morning! So frustrating but through the day my bloods have been fab! How are you finding pregnancy so far? Is this for your first xx

Aw I know the feeling I've been tired the entire time I'm in bed by 9pm every night! Lol everyone told me once my morning sickness went I would feel amazing and bloom - this so far has not happened

yes shes my first, I'm finding it ok it's hard having to test and adjust my pump all the time but if I didn't do it I wouldn't be giving my baby the best start I can

the diabetes side of pregnancy hasn't fazed me too much it's all the sickness I've had and problems with other illnesses that the pregnancy has irritated that make it harder for me personally but only another 15 or so weeks to go lol

At least your bg's through the day are really good :) but the time they are higher over night would be better if they were checked and adjusted, sorry I can't remember if your on MDI or a pump but you should consider getting a pump if you don't have one, I woke up every single morning with high bg's when I was on MDI then when I change to a pump 2 years ago I've never had that problem :)

Haha I hope my morning sickness stops I haven't been sick for 2 days!.....Bonus!!

You seem to have the hang of it... Think I am starting too now, I was told to split my bolus to half in morning and half at night but found i was running high all night and as you know in the morning I have just gone back to do my bolus once before my bed and my bs have been bloody fab! Waking up three mornings in a row at 4.6 and this morning at 4.3 and they have been no higher that 7 in the day! A few low ones but nothing I'm worried about 11 weeks tomorrow and I'm sure this will all change again lol!

I spoke about having a pump with my Dsn on Friday but change does scare me I feel so in control with my injections after doing it 16 years think I would be very worried and maybe something I would consider once my little sunshine is here

How are you? X

Wow sounds like your bg's are spot on lately well done!!

Was your DSN supportive when you spoke about a pump? Did she offer you any info/advice? You will know when the best time is for you, I was on injections I had nearly 25 years of injecting before I went onto my pump it's a big change and it feels very odd, but good odd lol xx
