I am female, 56 and was diagnosed as Type 2 about 5-6 years ago. For some reason the date does not stick in my mind, which is unfortunate as insurance etc always ask date of diagnosis!! Perhaps I should ask my nurse :?

When first diagnosed I was very careful about diet and checkging BG, but over the years and various traumatic events including a strange period of denial when I decided I didn't have diabetes I barely checked my BG, (although went to bi-annual check ups) and gained weight, a result of which my meds were gradually increased so I was taking 5 metformin a day...and a glipizide of 2.5 mg. The metformin went down to 4 a day but a further 5mg of glipizide was included. From the 27th May, after completing my degree :D I decided it was time to take action! I have lost 1 stone 4 lbs since that date and have read everything I can on the subject, mostly here which has been enormously helpful!

I have found out in the last 2 weeks that I need to low-carb. I have been checking my BG several times a day since May so that I can see which foods have the worst effect. For instance, I had a very small portion of muesli, carefully measuring, for breakfast this morning and my BG shot up to 10.2 whereas it has been between 5-6...

That's it for now I guess...:)

Hi Byatt and welcome to you.

It's nice to see that some of what you have read here has already been helpful to you. If you have any questions then please feel free to ask and we'll do what we can to help.

Hi Byatt,

I'm a Type 2 as well. I've changed my diet and achieved a massive change in my diabetic situation.

One thing that I have learnt is that I can't eat hardly any carbohydrate in the morning for breakfast especially cereal but also bread or toast without pushing my BG up to 10+. The only one that I've found that doesn't is Lizi's granola (nut based cereal) that I buy from Tesco. I've moved to eating tomatoes and very lean bacon for breakfast with half or even a quarter slice of toast.

However, I can eat quite a lot of carbohydrate in the evening without any problem - I've found things like brown rice, pulse spaghetti, spelt pasta all to be helpful in preventing high BG levels. Most of these can be found in Tesco.

Best wishes - John
