Hi,
I was diagnosed as type 2 diabetes in 2002 aged 28.
My fasting readings in the morning are never below 10 normally between 10 & 12mmol. (Hbac 8)
It doesn't seem to matter what I eat (except pure sugar). I have almost removed all carbs from my diet eating protein & good fats.
The only carbs are normally in the form of tomatoes. (Over a year of this diet)
I have been injecting Humaog 50/50 in the evening & 25/75 in the mornings.
I am struggling to continue exercise because my muscle mass keeps getting bigger & bigger. ( We are talking hulk here)
I don't seem to lose much weight due to this muscle conversion & to be quite honest am getting fed up after all these years.
If I lose weight I put it straight back on by looking at chocolate. :D
I was tried on Jardiance which worked well but this makes me have a thirst that cannot be quenched & dehydration that sticks my mouth shut. ( A bonus according to my wife) I was drinking over 8 litres of water a day.
I believe my diabetes was triggered by drinking alcohol in excessive amounts as a young man.
Can anyone please point me in the direction of hope as I feel like I am diabetes & not me anymore.
Regards Tony

Hi Tony - Have you discussed your concerns with your Doctor? Later onset T1 is sometimes not picked up until the bloods start running out of control. There are tets that can be done to help determine your specific type, so a discussion with whoever you see about your diabetes would likely be worthwhile.

Hi Sef1 - In your post, above, you declare yourself T3c. Is that an official diagnosis?

Your profile suggests you are T2. If you're T3c, it would be beneficial to change your type, to best avoid erroneous advice.

You can change your type by clicking on your user name at the top right hand side of your screen. If you then scroll down, you'll find Diabetes Type, with many options to choose from.

Welcome to the forum.

Hi, Thanks for the quick response.
I have had quite a few conversations with my nurse about my concerns. To be honest I feel like I'm banging my head against the wall.
My grandfather had type one ( Mothers side) & my father type 2 so I'm on a hiding to nothing as genes go.
It doesn't seem to make any difference how much insulin I inject either. If I double my dose it brings my meter reading down 1 to 2 points. (Although it does give me a cracking headache I haven't had a hypo since being on insulin. It's almost like my body adapts to it.

Again, as I understand it, there are lots of ways to use insulin, but mixed insulin gives fewer options. Am I correct thinking you are on a mixed insulin?

It could be you still have a bit of tweaking to contend with or even a change of actual insulin, but those are conversations to be had with your diabetes team.

Sorry I'm not being much help, but not being an insulin user I don't have personal experiences to go from.

Tablets (oral)
if high levels of insulin are not doing a lot it does sound like a level of resistance is active there.which would point to type 2 type 3c the insulin should be working

@TonyDalton - When you say the more insulin you have the more muscle mass you seem to build; how are you assessing your body's composition mix there?

Are you exercising a lot, and if so, what sort of exercise are you undertaking?

Well This is just some thoughts I have had on Extreme kinds of life style and /or Extreme eating styles ...

I remember one in here that have a servere eating disturbance eating far too little all the time. And the persons blood glucose was too High all the time even as the person was considered type 2 diabetic

That was kind of a riddle to me

But I think ones body/ liver can in rare cases turn into an overworking glucose producing maschine to compensate a very very low calorie and/ or food intake

In your case the carbs from tomatoes are really close to being only angel dust when it comes to being a carb source

I don’t know if such an effective and over producing liver pattern can be reversed
Very few persons can build muscle in the rate you do , I think it is very much a genetic thing when one can build such big muscles and if one actually do not want being in and endless treadmill on keeping the body more muscle dense instead of a mix of fat tissue and muscle average then this whole fight can be too much in the long run

I don’t know what things are about in your case but I have an idea that high blood glucose is not always initially about diabetes in every case

In type 2 diabetics it is rather common by the way that the rate in which the liver transforms proteins into blood glucose is much higher than non diabetics ... and many forget that the body can also produce blood glucose

I cycle a lot with my son. I think one of my problems seems to be a yoyo between muscle mass
and fat. If I exercise I build muscle, if I am unable to exercise it turns to fat.
I also do a lot of heavy lifting and strenuous work.

If you're measuring it in some way, what sort of muscle percentage are you running at? Did you lose a lot of weight at any time along the way, and if so, was that deliberate or did it happen despite your best efforts?

Thank You for your interesting reply.
I think you could be right about the liver. The less I eat the higher my blood sugars seem to be.
I'm beginning to think the receptors which control insulin think in my case 11mmol is 5.6mmol.
In other words my body believes my sugar levels are normal.
If I inject my body merely stops producing insulin to compensate.
I have been to see the dietician several times & she says I am eating all the right things in the right amounts.
If I drink alcohol my blood sugars spike which seems to be the opposite of the majority.
I accidently injected twice one evening of 50/50 mix (70) units and it didn't make any difference whatsoever.
I've been on this insulin for about 8 yrs.

I've trawled the internet & cannot find any answers to these phenomenon.
Any ideas would be gratefully received.

Yes I lost about 7 stone from my heaviest but seem to be stuck now. I dieted & exercised to try & lose my bulk but I've been steady for 3 years.
I have one of those fat reading scales. which says I am 28% fat.

Wow! That's quite a weightloss. When did you start and stop losing weight, and what is your current BMI? What does your scale say about muscle percentages?

I started losing weight when I was first diagnosed in 2002. At the moment I am 39% but this can rise to low 40's.
My bmi is apparently 38 but even my nurse shakes her head at this figure. I now have a 40 inch waist at 22 stone.

Is it fair to assume you aren't 80 inches (6' 8" or 2m 03cm) tall?

Gaining muscle is really unusual. It's usually fat, unless the person is underweight, in which case it could usually be the body recovering from that state. Have you requested specialist professional help with this, and have you had a decent wide panel of bloods done recently including thyroid profiles and Vit D?
