Help I'm confused (it doesn't take much lol)...

I went for my 'diabetic blood audit' on friday and have my nurse appointment next week, but as I'm impatient I phoned the surgery today to ask for my results. I asked for my HbA1c result (I'm anxious to know as it's my first one since diagnosis 4 months ago)... The receptionist then reeled off my cholesterol, kidney, liver and thyroid results. I repeated that I'd just like to know the HbA1c please and she said "Yes that's what all those results are, they're ALL the HbA1c" :?

I thought the HbA1c was just blood glucose? Anyway, I gave up at that point and decided to just wait to see my nurse :lol:
 
HbA1c is definitely only the average blood glucose result. To be honest, this is why they usually don't let receptionists give out test results, even when people can understand them. I think waiting to speak to the nurse is definitely the best idea.
 
My GP surgery won't let the receptionist give out any blood test results. I had a HbA1c done and phoned for the results. I was only told that the result was normal and no action was needed. I questioned why I couldn't have the figures and the receptionist said that they weren't allowed because they may get it wrong.
 
Well, I phoned again today and spoke to someone different, she said it's 6%, YAY!!!
 
A 6 is very good. You should be proud of that.

I said this in another post, but I like to repeat it because I think it's important: Your regular blood-sugar test measures the amount of free-flowing glucose in your blood. The A1c test measures the amount of sugar sticking to the hemoglobin in your blood. The A1c test reflects your average blood sugar levels over three or four months, but it is weighted towards the most recent months. Thus, if you had a very poor diet for 2 months but then improved your diet for the last 2 months, you will have a better A1c result than if you had 2 good months followed by 2 bad months.
