Seriously, the veggie case for feeding the world with food. rather than feeding animals for inefficient food production makes good sense.

Hi Ian I don,t tell any one else what to do i only do what is wright for me my husband and son are meat eaters again there choice. when i had my son i was a single parent and started to bring him up as a veggi but always said that when he wanted to eat meat he could. one day my dad had got some potted meat on bread but had to leave it to let the dogs out when he got back my son who was just two was eating it saying mmmm nice o i thought that was the time to let him eat it

If god did not want us to eat animals, why did he make them taste so good !

God did permit us to eat animals, but only after the flood. Adam & Eve were vegan in Eden.

Genesis 9:3 Everything that lives and moves will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything.

My daughter classes herself as veggie about once a week whenever we have roast chicken. This is something she has done since she was about 5. We explained what it ment and that if she wanted to give up meat we would suport her, but not join her.

She has now desided she is not going to be diabetic on Sundays as thats the day we bake and have sunday afternoon tea with cakes and trifle.

If it makes the other 6 day a week easier, then I will agree to anything especially with no sugar jelly and low carb muffins.

Hi Donnamum,

If your daughter has fun with cakes and buns one afternoon a week that should be okay. You will need additional insulin coverage. This is what we did with my son, he has a "weekly treat" and can eat total rubbish if he wants for that treat. His blood sugars were so good we increased it to a twice weekly treat.

I do two baking sessions a week now all doing low carb baking. My non diabetic son is a keen cook/baker and makes a very impressive chocolate roulade. Can you involve your daughter in the process?

It is possible to make a low carb version of trifle and even lemon meringue pie. Again these are a lot more effort than the muffins which are the easy "bung it all in, mix and bake" method.

She loves eating, so is happy to help out. Her sister (age 10) is very keen cook. Plus she is doing her Guides cooking badge which involves cooking for a diabetic. She has settles down with eating treats and will often refuse them. She makes me so proud. I wish I had her will power.

Hey Marz Barr

I can feel my blood glucose rising just typing your username. I have been diabetic for 23 years and vege for 10! I am therefor a rather akward person to feed but i get by, admittedly i don't get invited to many dinner parties. I know quite a few sugerless meatless people. each to their own.

Hi Marz Barr

I was a committed veggie for 16 years, from The Smith's 'Meat is Murder' era onwards! Kept me out of the firing line through the BSE years too. It was never really a health issue with me, and I did quite enjoy the confusion as people tried to rationalise vegetarianism with my Marlboro habit. :?
I didn't miss meat at any stage, but I gave up being a veggie 5 years ago. I found I was just eating too much starch to stay healthy. Not impossible to be a low-carb veggie of course, but much more of a challenge and, hey, I'd done my bit!

There is definitely a limit when it comes to tofu.

All the best,

fergus

I have been veggie for 35 years, I love animals too and I became a veggie after my parents took us on a farm holiday, one night we just couldnt sleep because a cow was making the most dreadful noise as if it was in pain, my Mum thought she is in labour, but this lasted the night through, in the morning the farmers wife explained that this cow was crying because they took her calf away to the slaughter house, that was enough for me, I later also found out that cows can actually cry real tears.

I have been on a very low carb/Meditteranean style diet for years, the small amount of carbs I eat on a normal day are complex carbs only, but sometimes I blow it and eat a whole pile of muffins or something, slap my wrist Fergus!

About 3 years ago I started eating fish though, I have that about twice a week, some days I dont consume carbs at all, I dont find it hard to do the very low carb thing, eggs and cheese and occasional fish work well for me, I dont find it boring and I am very healthy and no longer need medication except for Thyroxine.

All the best everyone and I hope you achieve good control of your bg

Karen
