So hello. I found this site the other night and I think it's fantastic. My daughter was diagnosed aged 3 in October 2009 and things have been a little up and down but she's doing pretty well recently. It's such a comfort so read about other parents in the same situation but it makes me so sad that there are so many children with Type1, I had no idea before my own daughter was diagnosed, which makes me slightly ashamed. Anyway I look forward to speaking to you all and getting the advice that I feel I need so much of the time!

hi, you've come to the right place for help, advice and support, i'd of been lost if i hadnt had some sound advice off the lovely people here.
my daughter has just turned 4 and was diagnosed in october 10, and i cant believe the amount of younger children this horrible thing affects, i was told it was rare but obviously not eh?
anyway, hope to get to know you better over time

Hello and welcome.
I think the rate of T1 diabetes in Australia is about 1:1000. I suppose it adds up over time. I know people that hid their diabetes from me (and everyone) but once you are part of the group they come out of the closet from all over the place. I don't really rush out and tell people that Khaleb has diabetes either :shock: .

Anyone that has anything to do with Khaleb knows he has diabetes. I think I just don't want people to feel they have to express sympathy with him also having Down's. I don't want to look like I'm expecting sympathy either. Hard to explain but it makes people behave differently or not want to complain about whatever is going on in their life.
To give you an idea of what happens at diabetes camp ...
We go around in a circle and before they get to me parents whine and complain about how diabetes has been such a drama and a chore. I then explain that my child also has Down's syndrome + T1 + no thyroid function and not a single person after makes the slightest complaint about their kid having diabetes.
So hey, sometimes I just don't tell the whole story. I quite often don't even tell people he has Down's unless they ask.
