I was diagnosed with type 2 3 months ago and am not coping well at all. My levels came back at 8.6. I have been testing my bloods before breakfast (which are around 9) and before dinner (aroubd 7). Every time is goes above 7 I get extremely upset, I think this is because I can't get my head around having it and am petrified. I am 28, 5ft 9 and 12 stones. I am not over weight and eat an extremely health diet. I feel at a dead end and dont know what else I can do to bring my levels down. I dont have an local groups to go to either. Any help and is this normal!

Hi @emmashaw706 I'm not sure those figures are as bad as you paint them to be. Your pre breakfast reading may be elevated by 'liver dump' (Have a search - many people report this experience) as such they are normally the last reading to 'come into line' Concentrate on your pre dinner. and 2 hr after dinner readings, paying particular attention to the change between them. Keep a diary of what you eat, and where the after meal reading is say >2 mmol than pre-meal have a look at what you have eaten, and adjust the meal next time giving particular attention to any starchy carbs on the plate

Chin Up!

Try not to put too much emphasis on your morning reading as its not the biggest indicator of how well you are doing. My own morning readings are usually quite high but my HbA1c results over the last 18 months have been in the 30's. As stated above just concentrate on testing before and after meals to gauge your progress. What does your healthy diet consist of as it is easy to overload on carbs by eating what is considered a healthy diet.

The period just after diagnosis can be a real emotional rollercoaster. I think many of us have been round the track a few times.

Is 8.6 your latest HbA1c (3 month) test result?

It's great that you're testing, as that's usually one of the keys to grasping control, as it can help you to understand which foods push your numbers up and which are a bit gentler. Have you noticed anything particularly troublesome in your diet?

As you recognise, for we T2s, diet is really important to how we progress, and I think most of us had surprises (of the less pleasant sort!) when we started testing. What sort of things are you having to eat routinely? If you could give us a few examples, we might get some clues.

Have you looked on here for a local support group?: https://www.diabetes.org.uk/How_we_help/Local_support_groups/ . I'm fortunate to have a group close to home. I never fail to be amazed how many turn up every month.

Hi. Your readings don't sound at all bad. Yes, the morning fasting test is only a guide and my DN said to aim between 5 - 7mmol with my insulin which makes sense. The test 2 hours after a meal is the more useful check together with the important HBa1C which you may not have yet had and will be done at every review with the GP/DN. Any meter reading below 8.5 mmol 2 hours after a meal is fine

I think everyone is at shock after being diagnosed. It takes a few months to find a new balance. It's just a question of time.

By the way, since you are very young and not overweight, did you have tests taken (e.g. the GAD test) to rule out Type 1, or LADA (late onset type 1)?
