Yesterday started OK. Raspberry yogurt smoothie for breakfast. {Full fat yogurt, frozen raspberries, cream and water all whizzed together. Lunch was half a Lidl protein roll toasted with cheese and a cold chipolata.
Afternoon BG reading 5.7
Then it all went wrong, :(
Teatime.. hubby fancied fish and chips. It was my birthday so I said OK . I'll have some fish and just a few of your chips. I'd done this before and taken all the batter off the fish with no problems.. well I probably had about 16 chips, ( double my usual ) and I was naughty and ate the batter from the top of the fish.. left the bottom bit.
I went out afterwards for my usual 30 minute walk and felt yuk.. low grade headache and no energy. Took my BG on return and it was 10.2 .. eek ! It hasn't been that since I was diagnosed over 2 years ago ! I drank lots of water and still at 10.2 an hour later.
Had a mug of cocoa with cream and 20 mins later it had come down to 8.6 . Ate a few nuts and it was down to 7.2 before I went to bed at 1am.
Feeling like I have a hangover today.. yuk ! Now I know why I avoid carbs !!

Yes, it is like a hangover. Last time I overindulged on the carbs I felt so **** I wondered if it had been worth it!

Been there, done that, endured the guilt trip afterwards. There will be other times, but not many. Every moment is a new opportunity etc. Carry on being well and remember your experience can help others.

I can only sympathise, having been there with a chips overload!

I've done a deal with the canteen staff at work. They won't let me have chips now! Which minimises that opportunity, at least,

The good thing about it (I think this every time I do it) is that it reminds me WHY I do this LC thing, and WHY I hate feeling that way.

Keeps me on the straight and narrow for a bit, and then I need another reminder. ;)

Had the same issues yesterday Had Gammon, fried egg, baked beans and deep fried sweet potato chips (too many as it turned out) G after 90 mins 8.9, and woke up this morning in the 6's

I have never experienced feeling bad or unwell when I had overdone the carbs which I certainly do sometimes I have to test my blood to know if I am higher because of eating to many carbs

I don't get the carb hangover immediately - it takes a couple of days of consistently overdoing it for me to suffer. I think it would be better if I got a reaction soon after over-eating carbs because then I might learn my lesson. Its not helped by one of the tablets I take for my arthritis - amitriptyline - makes me feel hungover in the mornings no matter how many (or few) carbs I've eaten. :(

Funny enough. As an insulin dependant. If I over treat a night hypo? A hangover in the morning is just how it feels... Along with a high.. :banghead:

I feel the pain.

Thanks everyone.. I have definitely learned my lesson from this and it will make resisting that batter and chips a lot easier in future.. Either a skate wing or dover sole fried in butter and black pepper sounds like a much better option.

I googled amitriptyline, because the pills I've been taking for arthritis don't seem to be working any more, and it said its used for treating depression, but it can make you feel hungover and suicidal(!) How does it help arthritis Is it helpful?

That's not too bad.
Its the spike that people are working hard to avoid. As research is stating that is where diabetic damage is done. Overall excellent bgs can still cause damage, longterm. @asparagusp . Often the spike cannot be avoided, stressful times or illness. Many achieve lower hba1c as a result.

I used I to use it for pain. Lower doses are used for pain relief and higher doses used for depression, in the past.

Well, it used to - but I'm not sure its helping at all any more. I was prescribed it because the reason I went to the Dr in the first place was because I couldn't sleep because of the pain in my back, neck, hip and knees and it helped with the sleep problem at first but its not helping any more. The only thing that did help was tramadol but my Dr has taken me off of that because of the psychedelic side effects I was experiencing. :( Apparently I could sue the Dr if I had a fall or something while bombed out of my head.

Until your post I hadn't joined the dots - about a month after starting on amitriptyline every night I started receiving treatment for depression. The Dr (and everyone else) said 'the Black Dog' (as despression is called locally) is down to the pain and the way its affecting everything in my life - but it really might be a side affect of the amitriptyline. Thank you for the heads up x

Hi daisyduck
i hope you had a nice birthday , it does show how well the diet works for you and in the past you may have had fish and chips and not had any noticeable reaction, we all have what the hell moments, mine was a scone with jame and cream it just called my name.
regards
James

Mine was those big sticky medjoul dates.... about 2 months ago I couldn't resist - THB I didn't think my bg could get that high without prolonged carb binging - wrong - it went up to 23.8 after eating a 300g box of the blummin things.
