Hello everyone; I have finally found a British forum for diabetes and this is wonderful, but I'm confused; sorry to say so, but whenever I click on diabetes uk there is no link to a forum which I have commented on could really be needed. Lo & behold I click on here and find a forum, which I realise is diabetes.co.uk instead of just diabetes uk, so I must ask the question are you the same group, or are you different, but my biggest question is if you are different why aren't you linked??? Surely at the end of the day the benefit of the patient/member is the most important, so why after joining diabetesuk have I found no link to this forum even though in email I've asked why there isn't a forum which to me is important, and there is this side which is why is there no links to diabetesuk??? or is there. I'm totally confused Are you the same or different. Please tell me then I can work it out for myself lol. Only joking there; If there is 2 different sites with so much information, then why can't you join up into the 1 group and serve everyone the same????
Cheers,
John

Hi John and welcome to the Diabetes.co.uk forum.

This forum has no connection with the registered charity Diabetes UK, other than many of the regular contributors here also being members of DUK. The charity has steadfastly refused to run a forum on the grounds that they encourage interaction between their members via their Balance magazine, i.e. they want input from paying members only. Hardly a way to encourage new members to join!

In answer to "why aren't you linked" - they are a charity whereas this website is a commercial operation. Just like you and countless others, I found this forum by chance and believe that it provides a fantastic service to the diabetic community. In fact the sort of service that DUK should but abjectly fails to do.

Confused??? That's a step in the right direction :D

Welcome to the forum :)

Many diabetics (including myself) have been confused by the standard diet & other advice and have "controlled" their BS levels at a higher level than desirable. I have been following a low GI diet for 10 years & as predicted by DUK my diabetes has progressed. I've moved from diet control to MF, & increased MF. My last HBA was 6.8, which did not bother my Dr.

My general health is good, & I play club tennis at 69, BUT diab complications are developing. Early retinopathy & leg muscle pain. I considered better control would help. A search for "melabit diabetes" found this site.

A simply reduction in carbs as recommended on this site, & contrary to DUK recommendations has brought my overnight fasting BS down from 6.7 av to 5.3. I've also lost a stone in 3 months, bring my BMI to 25.

AND at last night's Hounslow support group meeting the retina screening coordinator said that the number of retinopathy occurrences meant they had to recommend an improvement in control levels down from below 7 to below 6.

This site is vindicated :D
