**** immune system

Hiya

I just wondered if many of you suffer from a 'compromised' immune system due to diabetes?

My husband is type one and in the last few months has had severe stomach cramps almost constantly and frequent bouts of sickness. (He is going for a scan in a couple of weeks to make sure it is nothing nasty).

He saw a different doctor at our surgery on Monday who said he may have just had stomach bug after stomach bug etc and this could be the cause of all the pain as his immune system generally will be **** (my word not hers!) now due to the diabetes.

Has anyone had a similar problem or thought that their immune system isn't what it used to be before diabetes and is there anything that can help?

Thank you

Hi feebiecat I'm sorry to hear of your hubbies awful stomach problems :(

I wanted to reply because when I read of the sickness and painful stomach cramps I had those symptoms for many many months last year. I was feeling extremly ill, vomiting, nausea, losing weight( even though I amnot big) very very painful upper abdominal pain and after months of trying different things and blood tests and 2 endoscopys I was diagnosed with Coeliac disease and now I do feel better. It may not be that at all, but it could be a possibility. Has hubby had any blood tests regarding his illness yet? So thats another auto- immune medical condition and just recently also diagnosed with Osteoporosis, but awaiting the consultants report. I very rarely get coughs, colds, bugs etc but recently these 2 other conditions in 2 months ( I've been type 1 for 24yrs this year).

I hope he gets it sorted out soon and he can find out what is actually is. Having diabetes can make us more seceptable to other medical conditions.

Best wishes RRB

I am not type 1 but type 2 but I have also had a weakened immune system. However, I now take Propolis occasionally - as recommended by a medical herbalist - and this seems to have improved my general health greatly. I can't remember the last time I had a cold, and didn't accept the flu injection when offered.

Propolis is a resinous mixture that honey bees collect from tree buds, sap flows, or other botanical sources. Apparently it can strengthen the immune system.

Anyway, it might be worth considering......

As a T1, my immune system has definately worsened since having diabetes. I get every bug going including the latest noro virus before christmas - not pleasant. I also have continual unexplained stomach problems - cramps, diarrhea and constipation. By last year I was hoping they works find something as I was at my wits end, but nothing showed up so they say it's IBS. still stiffening with it on and off.

thank you for the replies. sorry you've all had problems as well. it's quite comforting though to know that other people have experienced similar things. i just hope we can find out what it is!x

A lot of T1s have reduced immunity, I'm not sure aobut T2s. It's partly the reason we're recommended to have the flu jab every year I think - because of increased susceptability to getting the flu virus (as well as it causing complications with the diabetes if you do get it.)

I myself have found that my healing time for anything from a tiny scratch right up to a major wound is very much longer than a 'normal' person.

Not really helpful to you at all, but I thought I'd offer my experience.

**** immune system?

Without doubt start taking vitamin d. X
