Hi,

While Im focussing to get FBS and HBA1C under the range, just curious, what to do as home remedy in case FBS or BS is very low. While going to doctor would be priority, should I need to do anthing as first step - eat sugar? drink any juice? Wanted to be equip just in case it happens.

Thank you,
Kumar

Hi @pkumar

What numbers are you seeing that are concerning you? Are you taking any medication for your diabetes? If no, or just Metformin, it’s highly unlikely you’ll go too low.

Personally it’s not unusual for me to drop into the 3s and on occasion this has been the low 3s (once a 2.9). In all cases my liver helps out and the numbers rise pretty quickly. I’m usually pretty hungry when this happens so just eat a normal, low carb meal or snack.

If you’re on any blood glucose lowering medication, the advice would be different.

The advice is to take fast acting carbs (such as jelly babies or dextrose or orange juice), wait 15 minutes, test again, repeat if still low. If now over 4mmol/l, eat 15g of slow acting carbs (such as a packet of crisps or a biscuit).

There is no low carb hypo treatment. Recovering from the immediate hypo is far more important than maintaining a low carb diet.
Only if the hypo is medication/insulin induced.

The OP is type 2 and following a low carb diet and the advice is very different in that case. My response clearly states that the advice would be different if meds are being taken.

Indeed
I got a 2.5 yesterday after cardio and prior to food. Getting sub 4s are much more usual than they ever used to be which did surprise me at first as it is drilled into us that hypo is bad, but if we aren’t on meds then is it a hypo? it confuses me a little, but that doesn’t take much anyway!(Fish and chips last night ruined my levels after anyway but still interesting)

If levels are dropping a lot, and still on drugs, sounds like a medical appointment is needed. Another reason to test, which if on those drugs with a hypo risk should be prescribed according to the guidelines anyway
