In denial

This is my sixth year of being a Type 2 Diabetic. (I'm a 65yr old woman, disabled from spinal/pelvic injuries).
1st year was a kind of "shot in the dark" learning the ropes. By 3rd year (more to my own astonishment!) I was in remission! 4th year unremarkable but my spinal trauma gave me increased chronic pain. This year treatment for my spine/pelvic injuries became my main concern & I became depressed again. Eating & drinking properly has taken an extreme back seat. My blood sugars reflect this & yet I still crave the sweet stuff for self soothing & comfort.
How do I find the motivation to treat my diabetes properly when other chronic disabilities overshadow everything else?
Anyone else who goes through this?
How did you get back in track?

Hello @elleseum

Sounds like you're going through a Loy.

I still crave sweet stuff so I get where you're coming from.

For me the answer is non nutritious sweeteners- artificial sweeteners. I eat diet jelly and other such things.

From time to time I try eating less sweet stuff but fess up to using sweet stuff to comfort eat. I keep it very low carb. That helps me as I can ever have just one 'whatever it is' I am an all or nothing person and find it easier to have nothing rather than to try to have a small portion.

In Australia we are fortunate to have a few keto sweet options if you know where to look.

Thank you for your ideas & suggestions.
I do use sweeteners for hot drinks & do buy sugar free sweets but still really crave chocolate more than anything!
Tried cutting it out entirely a few times then end up impulse buying then feeling worry & guilt.
There's no easy fix or answer to food cravings & having your Doctor being judgemental too doesn't help & makes me even more secretive about it.
I guess the resolution lies only with me & my eating habits.

Hi I was in denial about my diabetes for years but now I need an operation for spinal stenosis and it has been delayed as my hba1c was too high. I was so upset but only myself to blame. I’m now back on low carb and back on the waiting list as I've got my numbers down.
I know where you’re coming from as I’ve turned to food so many times for comfort. I find the better I am at staying away from sweet tasting stuff the less I crave it and make sure I fill up on food that doesn’t raise my BG. Plus having a goal helps and although I’m sure my pain isn’t as bad as yours, it’s a constant reminder that I’m keeping on track for a reason. Staying positive is a great motivator so try and find something you can aim for.
There are lots of YouTube videos to make low carb biscuits, cookies cakes etc ‘Ketofocus‘ and the catchy title ‘all day I dream about food’ are my regular go toos

Hi have you tried the food supplements This is food in chocolate flavour?

I have that as a treat and it hardly affects my sugars and tastes amazing! Hope this may help a bit

Been there done that with just grabbing all the chocolate and stuff but now I've cut it out on low carb life style if I crave sweet stuff what is doing it for me is grabbing berries and that is sorting my cravings but I dunno if that's just me.

Thank you. I do eat fruit (against my Dr's advice) & that usually works well for me until I get the monster cravings for chocolate again.

Tha!k you. I'll look that up.

Thank you for your experiences & suggestions. I too have spinal stenosis & frequent procedures for it amongst other health issues. Being in chronic pain all day, every day makes life hard work, plus I live alone so I'm often depressed & lonely.
I'll have a look on YouTube thank you.
I do hope you get the treatment you're waiting for soon.

Lovely easy to make mug cake.

Get a mug melt a knob of butter in it in the microwave

Add 3 tablespoons of almond flour
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
Sweetener of your choice to taste
A drop of vanilla extract (not essence too much sugar)
Whisk all together and microwave for 90 seconds and it’s done!

Poke a hole in the top and pour on double cream.

Extremely satisfying and filling.

If you want a chocolate one I usually just add a square of 85% when melting the butter, just keep a eye it doesn’t go too far.

Sometimes I add 3 or 4 raspberries or a chopped up strawberry, they all juicy in the cooking and seep through the sponge.

Also used them split like a scone with clotted cream and a couple of strawberries crushed up

This is great as a savoury thing too, leave out the sweetener and add some seasoning or even dried herbs or Parmesan cheese, once it’s cool makes a cut in half and use like a bread bun.

I’ve also added it to stews and casseroles in the winter as a sort of dumpling

You could use high cocoa chocolate in low carb cooking, or grate/chop and mix into real icecream, or use cacao powder to make desserts. Fruit is a poor substitute, though I make sugar free jelly with berries once in a while, and that is low carb enough even for me - plus I can't eat the lot, as it is quite bulky.

I don’t have this issue any more but in the past I did! This YouTube site has amazing recipes and I highly recommend.
ketoserts, just put that in your YouTube search.

I eat greek yogurt (5%} with a very few berries (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries etc).
Or sometimes make peanut butter cookies - mega easy! Peanut butter, artificial sweetener (i use stevia or erythritol), egg and vanilla essence. Stir together, cook in spoonfuls on tray for 10-15 minutes.
Keto cheesecake is gorgeous and filling.
On Christmas day I enjoy the charmingly named dessert 'Sex in a pan'

I'll give anything a go, thank you.

Nothing wrong with eating low-carb fruit, either portion controlled or berries, and stevia sweetened chocolate is my go-to treat. I think you will find plenty of folks with T2D who find alternatively or artificially sweetened candy and desserts, and definitely chocolate! And of course - pair it with mixed nuts or ones favourite low-carb nuts....

Most days my sweet fix is fruit & I've been ok with that but then the chocolate monster in me needs more than a fruit fix! I've found some chocolate online & although a bit expensive I think I'll give it a go, thank you.
