Hi, most of us have found that the 'advice' given to us by the NHS hasn't been good advice. This forum is probably the best help and advice most of us get. Your levels do seem to be high, can you give us an idea of what you eat and when you test? Lots of people get a liver dump first thing so that will push a fasting test up if that happens to you. Can you ring your GP and ask for the actual result of your test?

I don't eat a lot of fruit as I have IBS too and used to find that fruit and bread would make me ill, I tested clear for Celiac desease. Since reducing my carb intake I haven't been ill with the IBS. I do eat lots of berries as they are low GI and don't have any effect on me. You need to test though to see if they are okay for yourself.

It's and minefield at first, but with the help from people on the forum, hopefully you won't feel so bewildered.

I agree with Ann. Carbs are what you need to deal with. White bread, rice, pasta and potato's will spike you if you have them in any kind of quantity. The best solution is to get a meter and test. It's unlikely, but not impossible you will get one from your GP so investing in your own is a good idea. Strips are expensive, however a lot of us have the SD codefree, that you can get from e-bay or Amazon and the strips are around £5 for 50, I have other meters as well, as my GP does prescribe a small amount of strips for me. Test before eating, then 2 hours later, you will soon learn what foods you can tolerate. It is a minefielsd at first, but I promise, it does get much easier.

Good luck - Joanna.

Hi, when i was 1st diagnosed i felt much the same & was lost where to begin. I eventually opted for the online Tesco low GI diabetic diet. It wasnt great but i felt took some of pressure off as someone else was making up my meal plans & providing recipes for a few weeks as i tried to get my head around my diagnosis. After about a month i stopped my subscription but had more of an idea what i was doing & contined low carb on my own. Have lost 3stone & BGs now a lot better. Hope this helps as a possible suggestion?
Good luck

Hi. I appreciate you have to keep fruit and veg down to small quantities. How about more cheese, fried egg & bacon for breakfast etc? My wife cooks fish and lots of meat for both of us for dinner. We snack on nuts. You can have 85% dark chocolate. I have a low-GI loaf from the local baker and try to find, but very difficult, multigrain bakery products and have these in small quantities.
