Ok so I got back my latest bloods and it shows a ha1c of 40mmol/mol which the nurse says is even lower than prediabetes so she says I'm in remission and to stop taking my gliclacide.

Thing is, although I have lost weight I haven't changed my diet all that much. I don't even know how I managed to lose 2 stone. and I occasionally still have a fasting blood glucose of >7 after e.g. a quart tub of ice cream the night before, even with taking gliclacide twice a day.

So I'm afraid to stop taking the gliclacide...

Any ideas anyone?

You don't have to just stop. Try stopping the second glic maybe every second day, and just see what happens? Keep taking your daily numbers. If ok, drop the evening ones, and see how it goes. Or you could try taking one in the morning day one, and then the following day take the evening one instead and see which works best. Bearing in mind, even if you went cold turkey, you still have your daily log to keep an eye on your numbers, so if they went up, you could restart anyway? Experiment, as nothing would go wrong intantly, so remember you have choices about how you manage the gliclacide. If you going to eat that much ice cream occasionally, maybe take 2 gliclacide the day before? Make sure it's proper ice cream and not low fat, which is less satisfying, and encourages you to eat more (and is often higher calories as it contains fillers/sugar to make up for less fat).

I think you need to keep up with whatever kept the weight off or things will creep up again if you dropped all the meds in 1 go without changing your diet or exercise.
Also you will still have the underlying condition (insulin resistance) which has caused this. A good proxy measure would be to look at your triglycerides/hdl ratio wherein you want the latter to be lower than the former.
One way to improve insulin resistance is to eat less bread, pasta, rice and obviously ice cream (sorry) but to replace those things with tasty real foods such as butter, cream, bacon, rib eye, avocado, mackeral/salmon etc.
Keep an eye on what happens to the fasting bg after you had steak and salad plus glass of red wine and you might be pleasantly surprised.
I know we all have a pudding compartment but the combo of fat and sugar is slowing down the absorption of the sugary component hence it is showing up in your blood sugar overnight.

You're just going to have to be careful. If you are achieving those numbers while taking something like Gliclazide then they will increase when you stop taking gliclazide. Gliclazide is one of those drugs that work by making the pancreas produce more insulin. I'm surprised and envious that you have lost weight taking gliclazide as it would be more usual to gain weight.
As already suggested, keep an eye on those numbers.
