This seems to be a good idea?

A few years ago, Arif Qureshi, 51, was told he had pre-diabetes.

He knew he had to improve his lifestyle so a link worker referred him to a walking football club run by West Ham United Foundation in Newham.

He says it's been a revelation, helping him to lose 2st 4lb (15kg) in four months.

"It's been a big thing for me," he says.

"I'm more energetic, more upbeat and people come to me for advice on health now.

"I've got a new lease of life from exercise."”

The report doesn't say anything about his Pre D changing in that time. However from personal experience exercise helps me to feel fitter, but not necessarily lighter! In my case it is predominantly walking and bike riding. Walking about 20 miles per week, and when the weather permits, cycling for around two to three hour a week.

Yes, the report was not comprehensive. It however alerted me to the possibility of the NHS supporting exercise as a means of helping to solve certain conditions amongst us all. The sort of “prevention is better than cure” approach that the Health Secretary was talking about just recently with his characteristic smile beaming over his face. :)

The NHS already recommend this and have done for a generation. It's called 'eat less move more'.
Seriously, trials of free introductory sessions at gyms, sports centres etc have been prescribed by doctors for a while but as Tim Noakes would say "You can't outrun a bad diet".

I had such a free trial but they wouldn’t / couldn’t continue it.

When I was younger and young (late teens going into 20s and 30s) I think I did outrun a bad diet. When I say bad, not horrendously bad but probably not the best of diets either. My diet in early life seems to have caught up with me at a time when my activity levels have diminished or so it would seem.

Yes, when I was having some arthritic type pains I was referred to a musculoskeletal clinic (basically specialist physiotherapy) who assessed me then referred me to the gym for weekly sessions with a specialist trainer. I had to pay I think £2 a time. I managed all the things I was given to do without a great deal of effort but it made the pains worse so I gave up. This was well over 10 years ago.

According to what I read this morning, it is intended as more of a social help than medical. For the elderly, lonely, bereaved and so on. It includes suggestions such as ballroom dancing classes, art classes, and similar. Less to do with exercise, more to do with mental health.

Yes, I can see that slant in the reporting, also I note that they sent the guy to West Ham United and they could have done better with that. :D

The NHS in Wales have a scheme called Exercise on Prescription. For those with health conditions that would benefit from more exercise and it is free. Just need referring by your doctor x
