Lada for 8 months coming out of honeymoon. Giving tresiba once a day and 1.5 units fiasp when eating. I eat a keto diet but need a little starchy carb to keep my weight up. I increase fiasp dosage adding an extra 1 to1.5 units when eating starchy carbs, nuts, coconut milk, soy, hummus, sweetcorn because they spike my sugars. Have been advised to keep fiasp at 1.5 and allow the spikes which can go up to 15. What do you think? I don't know what happens longterm when I increase insulin to stay in range. Thanks

Let's put it this way, I certainly would not be happy if I was continually spiking to 15mmol. Of course it happens when I am careless with dosing or just plain lazy. But coming out of honeymoon I feel that you should be looking for better control or risking longer term damage to eyesight etc.

Reading between the lines and without looking at your previous posts, it looks as though you're on fixed doses, is that right? In which case you need to match your food to the insulin.

Have you been given an insulin to carb ratio, or worked out what yours is? Are you keeping track of your diet and do you know how much carbohydrate is in your meals?

Hi thanks for replying. Am on fixed doses 5 units tresiba, 1.5 fiasp. I eat meat, veg, eggs, nuts, cheese and add a bit of toast at one meal to keep my weight up. Can only eat meals with insulin. Snacks make my bg rise....includes any food that I eat. Have cut out all the food that gives me a big spike (lentils..potatoes). I was using a carb tracker but am not clued up on carbs and insulin ratios. Diabetic nurse said they don;t do this in honeymoon. Good to know that avoiding spikes is sensible.

You stated previously that you are coming out of honeymoon, why do you think this? How do you know it didn't end several months ago, has your insulin production been tested?

In my humble opinion, you should be speaking to your diabetes nurse/doctor/endo about the spikes. I've seen forum members writing that they react to the protein in eggs and as a T1 on a keto diet you may need to start thinking about the protein you're eating. Your liver can turn fats and protein into glucose too, this process is called glucogenesis.

Hi - I send my bg numbers, food diary to my diabetic nurse every 3 days. The nurse said I am coming out of honeymoon because my numbers were rising and I needed to go back on tresiba.. I had a consultant appointment last week but that was cancelled for the foreseeable. No clinic appointments because of covid. I will look more closely at what I eat and see what eggs and protein are doing to my numbers. That makes sense! Thanks!
