Type of diabetes
Don't have diabetes
Treatment type
I do not have diabetes
Just wondered if there was any connection between being on holiday in a hot climate and increased muscle/hip pain.....my partner has type 2 diabetes and has problems with hip and knee pain when at home...
...and has noticed increase in hip pain over last couple of days...could this be due to hot weather / blood sugar levels (don't know what they are as not tested) or just a coincidence.....just wondered if there were any links that could explain increase in pain.......and any suggestions as to how to relieve it....thanks....:)

I get hip pain but mine is related to lumbar spine problems caused by wear and tear. Have you tried Google etc?

Heat can increase BG levels.

But so many things change when you are on hol, that pinning down a single change may be impossible.

We just went away for 3 nights to a large hotel. It took us a good 3 minutes to walk from the bedroom to the dining room, and nearly twice that to get to our car.
For a very sedentary person, that could be a big increase in activity, placing more strain on fragile joints.
Or it could make absolutely no impact at all...

Then there are airport walking distances, unavoidable stairs, changes in diet, increase in alcohol consumption...

I think holidays are just different.

@Brunneria ..thanks for reply...was guessing that the heat could be something to do with raising bg levels and also the fact that he is eating far more than would at home..

Would say that activity is not really that much more than at home...still largely sedentary but probably increased distance to meals as you say...

Unfortunately I have not been able to get him to test his bg levels...I did pack the meter but he chooses not to use it....probably worried that it will be very high....even tested mine the other morning (5.2) in the hope that he would follow suit and do his but refused....:(

I guess my question really is....would high /elevated blood sugar levels increase muscle / joint pain....
.....if so I may be able to use this fact as an explanation as to why it is hurting more ....and perhaps get him to test....and think a little more carefully about food choices....there is so much on offer that it would be easy enough to choose other options (less carbs) that could potentially help to alleviate the discomfort and enjoy our holiday more...:)

@Molly56

Sorry Hun, but if he can't be assed to test, then why are you bothered? Let him put up with the pain etc. He can't be assed Molly to rule out or in, one thing for sure he doesn't care.

@donnellysdogs .....I totally take your point but I guess I am just aware of the appointment that he has in mid November about his knee / hip and can see the damage he is doing .....personally I can't see any consultant in their right mind agreeing to operate if he won't take control of his diabetes and losing some weight beforehand.....
I know that he hasn't had the initial consultation yet but the way he is acting at the moment is just putting any potential operation in jeopardy but he can't see that.....anyway as you say why am I bothered.....just thought if I had a good explanation for the increased pain I could give a reasoned argument for testing etc....
.....clearly I forgot to leave my caring hat at home.....;).
.....but the honest truth is I can't be bothered / am just enjoying my holiday even if I have to do things on my own....:)

@Molly56

See my private message to you ref op and blood levels....

The Carers in this world can have it tougher than the cared for!! Especially when the cared for don't care!!

More concerned for you to enjoy your hol to be honest.

Be aware, that OH may say about pain more, because you're with him more! He could just be mentioning more, because you are there to listen! Just my cynical, honest truth hat stuck on my head.

Would so love to hear that you thrust your Carer hat in to the swimming pool for a day!!!

Is the weather good and the hotel?

As someone who has had arthritic knees for 12 years and been fortunate to have spent several holidays in much warmer climes, I was always amazed at how my knees felt so much worse in those warmer climates. I always lose weight on holiday, possibly dehydration on the flight home, but also I have always found it much easier to stick to sensible eating when the temptation is much greater. My BG was always well controlled so it wasn't that. I think am usually much more active on holiday because I hate laying down in the sun, I like swimming, walking, mooching about visiting forts and other stuff.
I like your last sentence, enjoy YOURSELF.
If you're allowed to watch this in Aruba, change the worth "teeth" to "blood glucose".

@donnellysdogs ...thanks for private message....was helpful to know but will have to wait and see what consultant here has to say....
With regards to mentioning pain more am not sure this is the case...seems same as at home...think he would like to do more but says he can't....he is aware that this has a negative impact on me so regrets not being able to do more together...

Hotel is lovely thanks.....have had a few tropical downpours but guess that is what you expect in this part of the world.....
Floated some of my cares away in the Caribbean Sea yesterday afternoon....so relaxing.....:)

@graj0 .....is useful to know that the warm weather can have an impact so thank you for that....unfortunately my partner doesn't have the same attitude to sensible eating so am just having to turn a blind eye to that...and hope impact on BG not too bad.......and activity is also not good....:(

Getting up soon to go out for early morning walk along the beach on my own but plan to go to butterfly farm later on today together....is just up the road from the hotel just as I discovered on Google Earth!.....:)

Edited...how annoying ....have just tried to look up on Google Earth the bit that I walked to this morning...a fascinating area of rock pools....and it is hidden under a blanket of cloud....:(....

Just wondered if anyone knew anything about trochantric bursitis...I know it is always a bad idea to self diagnose but was looking at a recent supplement that came with a national newspaper about "How to beat back and joint pain"....the section on hip pain mentioned that it is not necessarily the hip joint that is the problem but the muscles...which interestingly ties in with what we were thinking about my partners hip pain...

Further investigations / searches have led me to trochantric bursitis....
http://www.patient.co.uk/health/greater-trochanteric-pain-syndrome
http://cks.nice.org.uk/greater-trochanteric-pain-syndrome-trochanteric-bursitis#!topicsummary

The pain he experiences seems to be more on the outside of the hip rather than in the groin area which points more towards muscular pain than pain within the actual joint....he has been referred to the consultant about his hip and knee but has an appointment with the pain clinic on Monday (tomorrow)...am wondering whether to suggest this as a possible cause...

Perhaps I am just barking up the wrong tree again but it seems to fit and answer some of the questions as to where the pain is occuring..

Any thoughts / suggestions would be appreciated, thanks

Just a thought, when your warm your more relaxed .. Cold muscles are tence .. So it could be the cold affecting his pain. The wife(yes I know the wife again) can tell me when it's going to rain about an hour befor it rains .. Think it's something to do with air pressure and the pain in her arm increases. She is not DB

@Enclave ...thanks for the suggestion...am not sure if the pain is worse in the cold but it seemed to be there whilst we were away on holiday and probably the same intensity.
Am just hoping that the pain clinic will look into the source of the pain and not just fob him off with some stronger painkillers which will knock him out with side effects.....was just doing a bit of homework in preparation so at least I have something to offer to the conversation....the symptoms of trochanteric bursitis seem to fit with the location of the pain so guess it is worth mentioning. He currently only takes co-codamol for this type of pain and does not take this frequently (as causes constipation) .....perhaps something with anti inflammatory properties such as ibuprofen would be useful but think there are some he can't take because of interactions with other medications to do with high blood pressure.

Molly - I suggest you clarify, right up front, with the Pain Clinic, what their purpose is. I have a feeling their function will be to manage long-term, chronic pain, with the source(s) of the pain being dealt with elsewhere; otherwise, when you consider what sorts of people are referred there (joint pain, migraine, neuropathy etc.), they would have to be experts in almost any discipline you care to consider.

I hope I might be wrong, but, it's important to understand what your expectations from the start.

I agree. I worked in a pain clinic for 2 years after my training. Its exactly as And Breathe says. The dx comes first. Pain clinics help manage chronic pain
The wife years ago went to a pain management thing .. She found it great .. Shown how to focus away from pain and not to fear it, as fear of the pain is more painful than the pain itself .. Also how to relax the area that the pain is in. I don't understand all that kind of thing .. But it helped the wife who refused to be stuck on pain killers and she can fully recommend his attending.

Edit to add....

It worked so well for her than when the horse fell on her leg crushing her foot smashing several bones, she was able sit propped up against a tree and give a report to the vet of how she found the horse before giving it first aid... Then was fireman lifted accross two fields before being driven to hospital .. I knew she was in a lot of pain as she used the controlled breathing exercises and was focusing away from everything. ..

There are so many ways to help with pain..esp these days. Combo therapy with meds mixed with meds to reduce breakthrough pain..mindfullness. pain so much worse when you retreat from it...I've experienced both sides. As a nursing sister. And as a patient. I have MS...would thouroughly recommend it

The wife will not take meds .. Has more problems with them than the pain it ment to stop. Ibuprofen makes her skin fall off and codeine based products cause her to pass out, sometimes when just walking along .. Last time crossing the road and looked round she was gone ... Laying on the road .. So she is house bound or is not taking them ... She chooses not to take them now.
Edit to add.. She is a very strong willed person .. I know I could not handle pain like she can .. But we are all diffrent ...
