Indian Takeaways...

Hi,

I have been googling and trying to find what is the best food to have from an Indian takeaway that is low Carb. There is so much info and so contradictory that I thought I'd post here.

I was thinking Tandoori Chicken Half/Whole or Chicken Tikka with Sag Panneer, maybe a couple of popadoms. Anyone got any thoughts of anything else or what the carb values are?

Regards

B

Tandoori chicken is probably ok. the so are most veggies, unless drowned in a thickened sauce. Poppadums made with gram (pea) flour are low carb. It's worth asking the staff for things made of gram flour.

Hi Blackadder

Tandoori chicken should be ok, the yoghurt is unsweetened, also meat dishes or paneer like saag (that's with spinach) and methi (thats with fenugreek), bhuna (its a dry-ish curry) are ok, I have had dopiaza and it has not affected my and my friend's bg at all (was just fried paneer with peppers, onions and spices), ask what is in the sauces, if they are thickened with flour then they would have more carbs obviously.
Stay away from the indian breads, you are ok with poppadums, they are gram flour, as hanadr already said, and obviously rice is a no no, but honestly try to have your curry with cauliflower rice and you will see that it works really, really well, I was not sure at first, but even my non-diabetic friends often use cauliflower rice, esp as it is a good way to get extra vegetables.
On the whole I think even the curry sauces are ok, many are thickened with coconut or cream, as I said you just need to ask about the ingredients.

Enjoy your take away.

All the best

WHAT?!? Popadoms are lo-carb??? I've been having them as a guilty treat whenever I have an Indian! This is truly a great day.

Stay away from Nann bread. That makes my BG SHOOT up. I occasionally have a chappati with my curry - they're wholemeal so they have less impact on BG. I might cut them out completely though in favour of a couple of extra lo-carb popadoms...

My biggest problem with Indians at the moment is the curry that I have. Honey Chicken. My god, that stuff tastes good... But Honey is basically the devils own sweetener...

Popadoms are lo-carb???
They're about 40% carb but are very light. A Sharwoods one weighs about 12g so about 4.8 g of carbohydrate. Chickpeas are also low GI. I would be more concerned about the amount and type of fat they were cooked in (but as a low carber that probably doesn't cocncern you  )

Hell no the fat doesn't concern me! I've just found out about chick peas today (the misses made some Humous and I checked the tin). So I'll be on the lookout for a nice, high-fat version of a Humous recipe! I may increase the ratio of Olive Oil to Chick Peas...
