Infection

Hiya,

I am type 1 24 year old diabetic.

I dont have a question as such but i wanted some opinions and advice. I have been travelling for 3 months and picked up a nice yeast infection in Australia, I went to the doctors along the way (most of them were terrible) making me have herpes test (blood and swap which came back negative) and giving me ointment and anti virals etc. The 'rash' was still there and it got to the point were i couldn't shower because it stings so much. I went to the doctors in the US who gave me antibiotics he said the Australian doctors messed me around. He said it was 'ringworm' which my fellow travelling friends enjoyed immensely. It has started to go down and its been 4 days since i took the tablet (the packet says wait 5 days before taking another but i took another this morning). My only concern is is that other small spots keep appearing that haven't been there for the duration (which sting) of the infection and the rash began bleeding slightly this morning (i put this down to me constantly looking at it and wiping it clean etc). As the packet says 5 days i am a little concerned the rash, although going away, has not recovered even 50%. I presume this is because my immune system is rubbish? I have had thrush in the past but never a full on infection like this. Why would i have got this? From the research i got the impression it was because i was run down with the lack of sleep, occasional alcohol and as a result of all the time changes etc and some erratic blood sugars (mainly because my long acting has been so difficult to control). My only other thought was that i washed my boxers in the sink with some cheap detergent which i probably didnt rinse well enough. It soon started after that. Has anybody had the same problem? Its been over 3 weeks now since it all started and it beginning to get me down.

I was also told that if i focus all my energy on the rash (which i have) the stress etc will make it worse ( i am starting to believe this true).

I hope the info is clear?

Thanks all

First of all if you are being treated for an infection and it is possibly an allergic reaction to the detergent ? Then the treatment you are using may be incorrect and will do nothing.

You really need to discuss this with your GP and maybe get a referral to a Dermatologist to get to the bottom of things. (so to speak ! :) )

Ooops....forgot.

If it is a fungal infection then high Bg levels will keep things going along until that is addressed. Do you know what your levels are throughout the day ?

Thanks for your advise.

Im doing DAFNE but my long acting is proving to me a nightmare. I have levemir at 10:30 AM (5 units) and 22:30 (27 units). Just before i went travelling 3 months ago i was on Lantus before bed. When i changed to the levemir i was taking 6 units before bed and waking up nearly 30. I have been increasing this every other day and am now on 27. The problem is is that i was changed to the levemir 5 days before i left which didnt given me much time in a decent routine to sort myself out.

I am always above 12 in the morning, I am going hypo around midday everyday and then my bloods even out throughout the day until about 8pm when they go up into the teens again. Before bed they are also good. I am averaging 1 large meal a day (which usually comprises of burger and chips) and then maybe having two snacks all day. So in essence i am not eating much at all.

Ringworm is a fungus, so Cugila's comment warrants thinking about.[blood glucose levels]
A traditional topical treatment for ringworm is Gentian violet, which you simply apply. RW is highly contagious, so you have to launder anything you touch frequently. You can re-infect.
Ringworm is usually caught through contact with an infected animal or its hair.

PS
you need to get the diagnosis confirmed. It's not a difficult thing to have done[ However, truthfully, you'll do better if you ask a vet. ]

Hi Ryan.
TBH, I don't think your dietary regime is doing you any favours......one meal a day....... burger and chips !

As a Diabetic you really need to control those Bg numbers by a combination of adjusting your Insulin doses and getting to grips with better eating habits. It might just be a fungal infection now, but these things can progress and get worse to the point of being serious. :(

As you have been travelling I would still say get it checked out properly. It really could be anything that might be peculiar to the 'Southern Hemisphere'.......?
