Is anyone aware if there is any system in place to ensure that those who have insulin dependent diabetes inform the dvla? I have my suspicions that someone I know who was diet controlled but is now insulin dependent has not told the dvla, nor her insurance company.

She has a very cavalier attitude towards driving anyway, and indeed her diabetes. I wondered whether hospital consultants have an obligation to inform the dvla of patients on their list or something.

It's all a bit awkward...

her insurance won't be valid so even if she doesn't have an accident which is caused because of a hypo (for example) her insurance would be null and void if she has failed to declare her new use if insulin. Common sense really! Not sure about 'legal' requirements but I'm sure someone out there will have a list of laws you are breaking if you fail to disclose this info to the DVLA.....

Debloubed is spot on with her advice.

It is the patient/driver's responsibility to inform the DVLA via the Medical section, not the Consultant or GP. They might tell the Patient to notify the DVLA but that is far as their responsibilities go.

The driver MUST notify the Insurers of a vehicle as well. If they fail to notify then the insurance will be void.

The main offences are:
1. Driving a Motor Vehicle on a Road with No Insurance.
2. Driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence.

Both these offences are very serious Road Traffic matters.
The penalties for No 1.
Driving without insurance. Max £5,000 fine. FPN: £200 Discretionary 6–8 points. FPN.....6 points.

Penalties for No. 2.
Driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence 3–6 months imprisonment. £1,000 Discretionary fine.....3–6 Penalty Points.

Obviously if there was an accident then there would be other offences which depending on the severity and circumstances could warrant up to 14 years in Prison and an unlimited fine. Worst case scenario.......

Maybe you should try and gently suggest that it isn't a good idea ???
