Hi,

I have probably posted this before but anyway....

I have used the Mio's and Sure T's but I they hurt, well the mio's do! I think it is probably pyschological but it is really starting to make me hate the pump....I dread set changes and it is getting me down!! What other infusion sets apart from the mio's and Sure T's could I possibly try please??

Thank you x

Ok yes good idea to avoid scar tissue as the skin isn't suitable for infusion sets, are you going for the fatty area about 2 inches from the belly button ? I use the sure t's now as I was getting an allergic reaction to the mios and have not had any issue with the sure t's - however sometimes it can be slightly painful to insert but rarely I also rotate like a clock but going opposite to the last set so each site gets a good recovery period, try pinching the skin too before inserting the set ? Otherwise it would be a mental block which you will need to work through, hope this helps.

Haha I have plenty of fat LOL so no problem there! I have quite alot of stretch marks near my belly button. I have a Sure T in now, as I found a box earlier, and seems to be okay! I think my main issue with mio's is hesitation though and sometimes they really hurt too, which is why I hesitate!

Thank you :)

I use the sure t infusion set, and the dsn pump nurse was very clear, do not pinch up the insertion site. It mucks up the even distribution of insulin. You're more likely to cause bruising too, and you're not supposed to inject into a bruised area. Medtronic advertise a Silhouette infusion set, recommended for tighter skin (pregnancy, I think), but I've not seen it offered on the nhs. (Just autocorrected to nuts!!! tee hee)

I also have extensive lithohypertrophy - the lumps under the skin. I use the band of skin about 3" up from the belly button, and all the way round to where the ribs can be felt. Would love to be able to use breast skin too, but the DSN says its not the right sort of subQ fat. In theory you can use thigh and buttock skin, but I don't think Medtronic thought that one through.

One thing though, if you put the needle in and it hurts, ignore it for a few minutes. If its still hurting after 5 minutes, take it out, it won't work properly. Continuous pain means you've probably hit a structure in the sub-cutaneous layer.

I dont pinch skin either! Well not all the time!

Come to think of it... I haven't had any bruising whilst on Medtronic pump, however I had horrific bruises when I had the Accuchek combo!

I don't think I'd ever use the buttock, id be too scared to sit down haha. I have used my thighs a couple of times.... not been a success though as they fall out!

I use Mios and find them OK. Sometimes they do hurt. I was told to change it if it still hurts after an hour (that goes for any set, not just Mios).
The only other set I have tried is the Silhouette. You can vary the angle of insertion with the Silhouette, which can be useful.

The only sites I have tried are my tummy, midriff, back and buttocks. Others use legs and arms but I don't want to use those sites yet.

You can get silhouette on the nhs. You can get any Medtronic set your dsn just needs to authorise it. I've used all 3. In terms of pain silhouette is worse for me. Saying which I use different ones for different sites and try to vary to ensure consistent delivery and good sites. Bottom with mio is good once you get past the psychological barrier of doing it where you can't see

Maybe I won't try the silhouettes then ha! I'll just have to wait till my appointment in October!
