Injecting in public?

I've caused a couple of burly male mates to go weak at the knees by injecting in front of them. It has become a bit of a game. If they're there and I need insulin, I'll try and catch them out. One of them has become a lot less needle-phobic as a result! #diabeticsdoinggood
 
I virtually always inject at the table in a restaurant and have never seen anyone notice let alone be offended. I discreetly raise my jumper, open my shirt a bit and inject in the stomach. Modern pens don't look like the syringes druggies use. If I'm with a party of strangers then I may go to the toilet or warn them I'm about to inject. My 8yr old granddaughter saw me inject a few weeks back at home and simply said 'does it hurt, Grandad' which gave me the opportunity to simply explain what diabetes was.
 
I have never hidden away to inject.

Have had some odd looks, which I ignore. Had a couple of pompous morons get all uppity and have put them in their place.
More often than not if someone does approach me about it they are more curious than anything and I tend to end up doing a little education.

Sometimes if I am out in a crowded place I may go and find somewhere that I will not be bumped or risk sticking someone else but if I am with friends I get them to run interference for me

Nothing to be embarrassed about, it keeps you alive and I have seen much worse things happening in public.

we are a rare breed indeed - I can't say I have ever seen another diabetic shooting up in public - I'm going to take a photo of the first one I see
Hey! perhaps we could start a monthly competition for the best pic of "SNAP THE INSULIN JUNKIE"
 
My cousin made a youtube video about this, he was in a restaurant and one of the people working there asked him to go to the toilets to inject instead of doing it infront of people..
I find this VERY rude considering they don't know what we go through everyday and insulin keeps us alive. Don't be afraid to do it in public! I do it everywhere without being embarassed, why should we?! Going to the bathroom to do it when you're in public could be worse considering hygiene! Don't be afraid to talk back to people that tell you to keep it!
 
I have had Type 1 since last May, and have never once thought about hiding my injecting, if I am hiding anything its my belly fat when i have to lift my shirt lol

So, no never once have I injected any other place then right there at the table or bar or wherever i currently am.. No one has ever seemed to care.
 
I dont inject insulin but cant see any reason why it should not be done in public, its a part of life. I feel the same about women breast feeding in public places, restaurants included, its natural and part of the normal course of things. Like the O.P said ,if you dont want to look then dont, just turn your head.
 
I don't hide away either, I test at my desk at work and nobody bats an eyelid. I injected in a restaurant yesterday lunchtime, why should I risk infection in a grubby toilet?

British Home Stores and I doubt that any one noticed at all - all too busy getting on with their own lives to bother with mine. Thank goodness.
 
I'm now on a pump so it's easy to just key in what insulin I need but before that I always used to inject in public, never would I go anywhere grubby such as a toilet. However, I was always 'discreet', just lifting my top up slightly and injecting in my belly or through my leggings.
 
Lol I was asked to leave McDonald's once for testing, but that was when I was young and didn't stand up for myself! Now I don't care - I've done set changes on the train a few times and no one notices. Sometimes people stare when I'm testing etc - I stare back, or if they're close enough I say "careful ... It's contagious" ;-)
 
I dont care I refuse to hide away like I am unclean. I inject wherever I am and if any one does not like it they can look away
 
I used to hide until I went into a smelly toilet, turned around and went out and since that day I've been testing and injecting in public wherever I am. If someone is watching then I'll provoke them with my injection, often they will look away embarrassed.
 
All a matter of personal choice I think. I do not let on to many people that I'm type 1 so I tend to inject away from the table if dining out or with people who do not know.. I keep hand wipes so hygeine is not an issue in any particular circumstance. Sometimes if I'm out with my wife and the restaurant is quiet I have no problem injecting at the table but more to do so with rapid acting insulin just after or just before the food is delivered.
 
Hi Doug, I was diagnosed with type 1 last October and I have never hidden the fact that i use insulin and if i am out and need to inject i do. I do try to do it discretely but will never go and hide in the toilets and do it. I have Diabetes and it is what makes me who i am and if people can not deal with my injecting then tough.

I injected my insulin at Bingo last night .
No-one objected or was offended by me doing this .

Injected during the break (interval) this way I could
still keep eye on my bingo numbers .
During the break I tested my BG levels .

Couple of regular bingo members have asked me about my
diabetes in the past .
Used this chance and opening to educate them a bit on
diabetes things .
Folk are just curious generally I have found .
