Hi. I fell about 3 weeks ago and injured my foot and ankle. I have diabetes that is not yet well controlled. I'm not sure if I broke it or if it's a bad sprain. The pain level has not improved at all but and I still have swelling. Can anyone advise me on what I need to do?

We can't diagnose or give medical advice here, but if you still experience swelling and pain that is not improving, you need to get medical help. Call your GP or locum (some practices might be closed for the holidays) as soon as possible, and request an x-ray to assess damage. Don't keep hobbling around with this without being looked at.

Hi @julelee , welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry to hear about your foot.
From your profile info I see you're in the US, is money a reason you haven't had your foot checked out if you suspect a fracture?

Most of our members are in the UK or other parts of the world where seeing a doctor and getting x-rays aren't something we'd need to pay for.
For us, the only logical advice on an injury that's not getting better in 3 weeks would be to see a doctor and get x-rays, diabetes or not. But this might not be possible for you?

Hi. Thank you for your reply. Yes, I have been unable to work and I currently don't have any health insurance. It would cost me hundreds of dollars to see someone and get an X-ray. Most of the urgent care places in the US require you to pay upfront.

Is there a free clinic somewhere relatively near you? I know it'd mean hours of waiting to be seen, in rather horrid circumstances most likely, but three weeks with no improvement is a bit concerning...

The only place I could go where I won't have to pay upfront is the emergency room. I would be billed at a later date. I think I'm going to do that today. Thank you for all your help with this .
I'm so sorry you live in a country which is rich enough to care for its people but chooses not to.

Good luck, and let us know how it went!

Are you having trouble seeing someone for your diabetes as well?
There are many members on this forum who manage their diabetes with success with dietary changes, which is a lot cheaper than medication if you have to pay yourself.
If you're interested, I'm sure they'll be happy to share what worked for them.
