Insomnia and weak legs post stroke.

I have type two diabetes insulin controlled. I find when ive been sitting down even for very short periods
my legs are very week. My blood sugars are high at the moment and iam suffering with insomnia.
I had a clinical stroke 8 weeks ago feel alright now, i was just wondering if this may be having an effect.?
 
There are some articles on this website that suggest what you are experiencing with your legs is post stroke fatigue rather than muscle weakness in your legs.

Sleep disorders are common after a stroke.

If you have not discussed these problems with your G.P. then I suggest that you make an appointment to see him and talk them through with him..

Just back from docs week legs may be down to lack of sleep. Doc gave me a perscription for Trazodone Hydrochloride, sorry forgot to say i also have been feeling low, suffered from depression in the past and it has creeped back up on me. Not to worry iam still breathing just lol.

A friend of mine had a quite severe stroke about a year ago, and he experienced most of what you are going through. The weakness, the fatigue, the depression. I think they are all very standard, and are part of the recovery process. His wife was warned that the depression can be the hardest thing.

He was offered some kind of counselling (don't know the details) and he refused it at the time, but in hindsight, both he and his wife wish that he had taken them up on the offer.

Now he attends some kind of stroke/physio group twice a week, and feels that helps tremendously, both the social aspect and the physical stuff they do.
 
Hi Stewpot - I had a brain haemorrhage and its similar to a stroke. I was also feeling very shaky and had reduced strength on my right side. It made it hard to do things like get out of the bath because my muscles would go into spasm when I tried to use my muscles to push out - and it's still a bit of a problem today. I also suddenly get shudders in my legs when I'm in bed which only last a second but they are uncontrollable. I also got whooshing sounds in one ear and clicks in the other ear - which I got sorted out.

The main problem was issues with sleeping and the doctor warned my partner my personality would change...and it did. I was far less tolerant and got annoyed quickly - which is something I am still working on :-p. I am told that I am not so easy going as I once was. I wouldn't say I was depressed but I may have been - it's hard to say as I'd just lost my brother to cancer so I wasn't a bundle of joy anyway.

Lettuce contains ingredients to help you sleep. Just juice it and it contains the same active ingredient that is used in lots of medicine. Just don't push yourself too hard as you will feel exhausted for quite some time. I would say although I went back to work within 3 months it took well over a year to feel anything like 'normal'. I have had 2 strokes so far, and frazzled half my braincells They were Ischaemic strokes due to blocked arteries, so are probably not the same as what you had, but the end effects are similar. I used to get wobbly legs, and went onto epelim for a while to control the spasms. This is a mood stabilliser as well as an epileptic treatment, so helped in several ways. But then I recovered, and went back to work for several years till I retired.

I found virtually no support from the medics, but found the Stroke Assoc forum to be a great source of support. I get back pain more now, and find standing difficult, but I never suffered sleep problems thankfully. The strole did affect my eyesight though, and I have had laser surgery to clobber new capilliary growth resulting from the blood clots.
