Hi there

I'm a type 1 diabetic and have been for 14 years now. I had an episode a couple of years back following a sickness bug which put my blood sugars out of control and ended up in a bit of a bad way, three days in intensive care...yuck. Obviously keen to avoid this happening again but now have rather a nasty bug which has completely knocked my control again, blood sugar went from 2.4 to 24.2 in the space of a few hours this morning and honestly can't work out how it happened. Anyways, I checked for ketones and got a reading of somewhere between 1.5 and 4, it was quite difficult to differentiate on the colour chart. I've tried calling the doctors who have referred me to the diabetic clinic but I am still waiting on a call back and would appreciate any advice anyone can give me on how best to treat this. I don't have much of an appetite so am reluctant to take a huge dose of Novorapid so have taken 10 units of Levemir. Any suggestions please.

Sick day rules........

I realize you obviously don't know them, but these are the rules to follow in situations like these.............it is also wise to get a hold of blood meter that tests the blood for ketones...

this is the DAFNE sick day rules, I hope you can see the image......

Thanks guys, this is really useful...can't understand why my doctor couldn't have told me that...they just passed the buck and gave me a number for the diabetic nurse...

Still better to speak with them though, if you've not done a carb counting course like DAFNE then I suggest you do so, they cover things like the Sick Day Rules and many other aspects of type 1 diabetes management.

Oh I will...when they finally return my call...which was nearly 2 hours ago now. It's a comfort to have a site like this though...especially at times like this.
I know a little about DAFNE course but I really must find time to book myself onto it. Isn't it a five day course though?

it is , although some clinics are offering it over a 5 week period, so 1 day a week...........

the sick day rules above only really apply to those on multiple daily injections and who are carb counting already.........they do help manage ketones though, which it looks like you are getting........

DAFNE is where true control began for me.............my regime evolved to suit my needs and now I am pumping........its definitely worth it.........

I don't suppose they do an online version? Trying to find 5 days straight to do something like that is near on impossible...even 1 day a week would be hard to swing with work commitments etc

Thanks for that...I'm looking it up now...looks like I could be a really useful exercise x
