Insulin and weight gain

In April 2009 I went on to Byetta and over the following 15 months lost 14 kilos which I was absolutely delighted with. However, I then changed to Victoza and 4 months later DSN put me on to Humalog 25 because the numbers were not coming down. That was end of November 2010 and by February this year I had gained almost all the weight. My HBA1C has come down so the insulin has been successful but I am now severely depressed over the weight, I think the weight gain has made my back bad and I cannot get suitable clothing to disguise the triple michelin man around my middle - I am not joking.
I am also retaining fluid some days in my legs, ankles, hands and fingers.
Any help and advice please. :(

How many carbs are you eating a day? If you eat less carbs you can use less insulin which is making you put on weight and encouraging the michelin man :)

hi jude my circumstances are exactly the same been on byeta lost weight went on victoza and then on insulin (nova) now battling with my weight again have started a programme at local leisure center rec. by GP 3 times a week just 1 hour though only on my 3rd week to soon to tell but its quite good fun everyone in the same situation they do eg. work out class(aching legs after, but they say no pain no gain)also i now give my collie an extra walk a day instead of 2 he now has 3 so he's happy but as i say too soon to tell will keep you informed if i lose any but i do know exactly how you feel after losing weight it is so disapointing take care don't despair!!! :D :D

i found that a type of insulin made me put on a load of weight (i mean loads! i was on large doses and put about 2 stone!)
i spoke to nurse and made her aware of my weight gain and how i felt about it and everytime i went back i spoke to her about it. this was when i was in young persons clinic so my mum was with me and also stressed the matter.
they soon realised that we werent happy so changed my insulin type and we soon noticed that i wasnt putting weight on anymore and was slowly losing it!

What was the insulin that made you gain?

After a very long wait, I managed to see the Consultant today asking him for help with regards to my weight gain. He explained how the insulin is giving me the problems I am experiencing and has prescribed me Byetta to go alongside the insulin to try and help the weight gain. More needles and probably back to nausea but I am willing to try anything to get rid of the weight again.

I was diagnosed in 2003 and pur straight on metformin and then gliclazide was added. By 2005 I was put on once a day insulin, this has change to Lantus Solostar, once a day, and Novorapid 3 times a day. I also take oral steroids so between the two my weight has rocketed. I am chronic asthmatic so cannot exercise and because of the steroids I also have osteoporosis, muscle wastage and joint problems (to name a few). I am at my wits end as to how to shift this weight. :(

Hi
I'm Type 1 and I've been diabetic for nearly 18 years. My control hasn't been the best over the last few years and I used to convince myself that when my sugars were better controlled I'd put on loads of weight (easily half a stone in a fortnight). The reason for the weight gain, however, was that I'd actually eat more and therefore inject more insulin. Whereas I'd usually skip lunch and have a choccy bar (naughty I know) I'd then have a proper meal with fruit. The carbs and calories were much more than my Twix which led to the weight gain. The more insulin you take the harder it is to lose the fat aswell.

The real answer it to put less into your body (food and insulin) and move more! Honestly, write down what you eat, how often you do any exercise and the amount of insulin you use and you'll see what I mean!

Hope this helps!
