Insulin dose too high?

My husband (type 2,on Novomix 30, does 28 morning and evening) is having more hypos and is very shaky at many times in the day. He was most unwell this morning, 2 hours after breakfast so he took an extra BG reading and it was 3.5. Out came the glucose tablets. He felt the same in the afternoon.
Can somebody please tell me if he could possibly be reacting like this due to being told to take too much insulin?
Please advise, many thanks

my daughter is on novomix 30.....she has to
have a snack at 2 hours after she takes it otherwise she will hypo...we are changing to humulog m3 soon to avoid the ontensity of the quick acting part of novomix..... x

I do hope that it works out better for her. My OH's diabetic nurse has been away for weeks. He has spoken to her over the 'phone but it seems he really needs to discuss this with someone? Thank you for reply and all the best xx

Exactly the same for me. When I was on novomix 30, many years ago, I needed to eat 30g carbs 2 hours after injecting.

Hi

There are other mixes of twice daily insulin besides Novomix 30. Humalog 25 is fairly ok and there are others. Not really surprised that Novomix 30 is causing some people to hypo as its action is fairly swift. All twice daily insulins require eating carb in set amounts approx every 2 or 2.5hrs in order to stabilise their effect on bg levels. The amount of carb needing to be eaten can be determined by frequent bg testing and using the NICE bg targets as the guideline to stay within healthy bg levels. I loved using twice daily insulins but every now and again I had a bad hypo during the night and needed help from my partner to get me out of them so that is why I switched to bolus/basal but wasn't at all happy and hated all the extra injections initially and then started to look at using an insulin pump.

Twice daily insulins are much easier to get used to than bolus/basal although its a compromise between being able to eat whatever amounts of carb desired by using an insulin to carb ratio or keeping to eating set amounts of carb at set times of the day.
