I have just been put onto insulin along with my other meds, I have not put this on that thread as I need a more general answer.

It is right that I should now feel very hungry all the time now that I am injecting myself with insulin???

could be insulin doing it. You may need to adjust the dose.

Hi,

I am part of a trial and the insulin (detemir) has been added to the meds that I take.

Since I have gone onto it (it can only be adjusted by the trial nurse) I have become really hungry and I am now worried that my weight will go back up after I have lost some from being on the trial in the first place.

What I wanted to know was how those of you who have been on insulin for a long time control these pangs, are there any tips or things that you munch that help stop the hunger (other than a meal).

When i used to be on 2 injections a day witch wasnt controlling my blood readings, i was injecting 60ml morning and everning and i was eating lots, i am a tree sergon and way just under 11 stone, but i could eat till i felt sick then 5 mins later could be hungry again.
I was told by my doctor that inserlin makes you hungry. Since going onto 4+ injections ive become alot less hungry

Hi
On Lantus I felt hungry all the time, and when I didn't eat I felt sick. Piled on weight as a result
On Porcine insulin I no longer have this problem.

Hello

Trying a daily oral Chromium Supplement might help with the munchies and the hunger.

Some diabetics also find Chromium reduces blood glucose levels and thus insulin requirements go down.

Since coming off the analogue Lantus and returning to porcine animal insulin my appetite has significantly reduced – one of my theories is that in some diabetics the GM synthetic analogues like Lantus & Levemir alter the hunger mechanism.

Best wishes

Thanks guys, your answers are much appreciated.

After 3 am fasting levels of 8.1, 7.9 and 6.3 I was increased to 12units per day and I know it is only a small increase of 2units today I felt less hungry. It could be that my body is adjusting or it could be as one of you has said that as the units increase the hunger levels could decrease.

I am going to wait and see before I chuck it all in, my only fear is that if everything works really well and I am able to control my levels down to below 6 which is what they are looking for and I when I come of the trial that I will be able to stay on the same meds as the trial.

Ho Hum we will wait and see.
