I've recently started on insulin, only a few days. I'm just having my 1st hypo, my insulin is due as my food is nearly ready, what do I do. Shall I just eat or take my insulin 1st, so confusing :?

thanks all

Have you corrected for the hypo ? If so, what is your bg level now pre-meal ?

If this is your normal pre meal reading then continue taking the insulin to cover the carbs in the meal you are about to eat.

If you are still low then you need to correct the hypo before you take your normal insulin dose.

I have no idea what to do, my blood sugar is extraordinarily low for me, It's always too high, so should I eat my meal now with my insulin or without. It's only been 5 days and scaring the life out of me.

I have no idea how to correct or is that when I have something sweet to raise my level :?:

Alison.
You need to know the exact number of your blood glucose level. Do you have a meter ? If so tell us what the number is at the moment. We cannot work without any numbers to go on.

As for correcting low blood sugar from a hypo, then you need to take 2-3 Glucose Tabs or a 'slug' of Lucozade or similar if you have them to hand, wait for 15 minutes and then check your Bg level again. It should have risen to a more normal level. If it is still very low then repeat the process every 15 minutes until such time as it reaches a normal pre-meal reading. That's all there is too it.

There is no need to be scared at all......just help us to help you by providing us with the relevant information please.

OK, it was 3.2, I took 3 glucose tablets 15 mins ago it is now 9.7. So do I take my insulin as normal now. Thanks for all the help

Thanks Alison.

Right, you might have overcorrected a little, next time try just 2 Glucotabs from that level. It is all a bit of trial and error really. However no harm done.

I would take your Insulin as normal and go ahead and enjoy your meal.........Bon Apetit' :D

No problem, Alison, you'll get there. :D

That's what the Forum monitors are here for. If we can help we will.

When you're not sure of something just ask a question, there's usually someone who can answer. :D
