Insulin not working

I have been on Metaformin for about 10years. I have 3months ago been taken off Metaformin and put on Insulin NovoMix 30. Although I have been told to increase my units to 41morning and 44 evening my readings taken 4 times a day are between 9.5 and 15.5 and I am worried they may not get to what they should be. My nurse is now talking about tabs as well as Insulin. Any advice please.

Well the metformin is "allowing" your cells to respond to the already present insulin. I presume you are a Type2 diabetic? I am confused as to why you were taken off the drug designed to help you. Sometimes Type2's are put on insulin as well as the tablets as at some point the pancreas can just get too fatigued and stop producing insulin.

If you are now just on insulin, no matter how much you pump in, if you don't have the slots for it to fit into then it wont work. Think of insulin as a key and the locks as receptors on your cells.

Have you quizzed them some more as to their reasoning?

Hi - I'm on both insulin - Novomix 30 and metformin. As said by the post above I am unsure as to why you would be taken off Metformin? You can take both medications together and they do work well together. My insulin intake at the moment is 44 on a morning and 44 on an evening and 4x 500mg metformin tablets - my bloods aren't perfect but they are certainly a lot better than they were. I would certainly query this with your Dr or Nurse.

as said above bit baffled as to why they would simply stop metformin for you. As already above, the metformin would help your body utilise the insulin produced, but over time due to being overworked your body struggles to produce as much insulin. That is then replaced by injecting insulin, but, you are still left with the problem of insulin resistance, even if injecting it. because you have been taken off the metformin the insulin cant be used as effectively. At least they are suggesting re introducing the tabs for you.
