Insulin or Byetta

My last a1c (1st feb) had increased to 7.8, my lowest ever having been just 7.2% so far. i have had type 2 for nearly 18 months now. I already take metformin xr, januvia, and glipizide. I am 22 and have some weight to lose. Have had some side effect issues with previous meds also.

I have the choice - a basal insulin or byetta.

Given the choice, and my situation. What would you go for, are there pros and cons to each?

Need some pointers in making this decision

Byetta every time, or Victoza.

I was recently prescribed Victoza, and it has been miraculous. My readings are between 4 and 7, and I have lost weight. The alternative was to go on insulin which would have caused my weight to balloon. I also take one Gliclazide and two Metformin at breakfast, plus two Metformin with my evening meal. So far, touch wood, I have not experienced any adverse reactions to the Victoza.

I would have to agree with Robbie. Byetta as a first choice, mainly because there are less listed side effects, although I never got any.

I am biased towards Byetta because that is what I use and what has turned my life around. I have lost over 5 stone in twelve months, Bg levels before a recent illness were all 98% on target and I had never felt healthier, livelier and fitter in my life, so for me it would be Byetta....however you inject twice daily. Victoza has had good results for many members here as can be seen in the 'VICTOZA' thread in Diabetes Medication and Drugs section. It has the advantage of only one daily injection but a much larger side effect list. Most people on it seem to manage quite well though.

There is also the 'small' matter of monthly costs for either medication.......something that you may not have a choice in. Insulin is the cheapest option and that is why a lot of GP's prefer that !!
