insulin passport

I was told recently by the assistant in my local (very) small branch of Boots that I would need to get myself an insulin passport. I duly made an appointment with my GP and asked him about it. He'd never heard of it, so called in the nurse who deals with most of the local diabetics (I'm on a pump, so have to travel 40 miles to a city hospital for my regular diabetes care). She promptly produced a copy of this object, complete with practice stamp and we had a brief three-way discussion about its purpose and usefulness. Frankly none of us could see the point of it and I really don't feel that I need yet another item which must be remembered and transferred from bag to bag wherever I go etc. etc. Anyway, no matter, I now have one. Thought no more about it until I went to pick up my latest prescription, but was then told quite sternly by the assistant that it would shortly be A LEGAL REQUOIREMENT for me to have this piece of paper with me when I collected my prescription otherwise they will not give me my insulin. I have looked the passport up on the NHS site, + a couple of others, and nowhere can I find any mention of this being a legal requirement. I'm not usually bolshy for no reason, but this seems to me to be yet another piece of superfluous and irritating regulation, and if true could potentially be quite dangerous. Does anybody else know anything about it please, or where I could get some accurate information? Thanks (ps. Am no longer in the Netherlands! Must go in and change my profile details - sorry about that.)

They can not refuse your insulin prescription as long as they know who you are and you sign for the stuff, there is no other requirement. Personally if some over zealous twit tried that on me I would just ask them to provide documentation as proof of the new law. Then ask for the prescription once more. If it's not produced ask for the script back and go elsewhere.

If it becomes legal requirement (which i doubt) then they need to come up with an idea better than a lame sheet of A4 paper, which is not convenient to carry.

I got one in the post last week from my GP practice..

I sent it back to them with a letter pointing out the stupidity of issuing a sheet of A4 paper that even when carried in a wallet would deteriorate quickly

Not to say a folder sheet of A4 is quite thick, i dont want that padding out my wallet

I’ve just attended a consultant / nurse appointment at a hospital in the area I have moved to. I was disappointed to hear that they queried my diagnosis and also told me that it was a legal requirement to carry the passport! I asked which law? The nurse couldn’t answer! Feeling frustrated!!!
