Hi. I hope you don't mind me joining the forum. I'm interested to hear people's views on Insulin pumps as part of a presentation I am giving on the pro's and cons of having a pump. I thought it would be nice to have some real life examples and hear from you guys as you are the experts. Thank you in advance.

Hi Lucy

Do you have a pump yourself? If you don't, then you could always search on the pump section of the forum as there are a number of threads here about the pros and cons of pumps.

Are there any particular aspects you're interested in?

Hi

Thanks for getting back to me. No, I don't have a pump myself. I would like examples for a presentation and thought it would be nicer to ask people direct as didn't feel right to steal people's comments without permission to use as examples.

I would like to know how it compares to frequently injecting, which aspects are a help or a hindrance etc...

What exactly is this presentation and what roll do you have in diabetes?

I much prefer the pump to MDI's, pros are not having to inject 4-5 sometimes more a day/which way it gives the amount of insulin needed for meals or correction doses/ better BS control once you get the setting right (mine are not quite there but are getting close), the list can go on.

The only bad point is that it is more work than MDI but you soon get used to that, I don't mind it being attached to me 24/7 which some people have concerns about.

@LucyKendrick, you should contact Pratik Choudhary and Roger Heller and look for the REPOSE study.

From what I understand it shows that DAFNE + MDI is equivalent to DAFNE + pump, and for adults there is slightly improved quality of life on pump. I have no further details but it sounds like what you are looking for.

Hi Lucy. Been on Pump for 6 months and love it. Type 1 for 52 years and MDI. There has been a lot to take on board but my Blood Sugars have greatly improved and I am aware now how I went wrong in the past. But the most important part for me has been all the support I have received from my Clinic.

Pros are:

- being able to fine tune my basal (no long acting insulin even came near doing that for me)
- being able to adjust for exercise
- being able to use different kinds of boluses
- being able to have temp basal rates for illness

Cons:

- when you get a bad set/site

Not many cons really!

My need for background "Basal" varies across the day, there are only a few hours where it's identical. One or two injections of long lasting insulin will not manage it correctly, I have lived with this for 30 years until being given a pump and getting good control.

Hi.

For me it's a slightly different story, I have just started on the pump, this is so far a relief as I was reacting to my insulin injections which I took 3 times a day for the fast acting insulin and once a day for the slow acting insulin. I got bumps after injecting and was in agony. So for me it's a relief so far. I'm glad that I have to change my cannula every 3 days. Hope that helps.
