I am a type 1 diabetic and for years my blood sugars have been extremely high! It's to the point now where even if I eat a banana or any other single item I have to take at least 50 units of insulin I have put a lot of weight on even though I eat healthy and exercise regular. I went for my regular check up at the diabetic clinic and have been told to increase my insulin even more as my body has become insulin resistant there are drugs available to lower my blood sugars but they are very expensive and unfortunately will not be offered to me. My weight is putting extra pressure on my organs. So does anyone know what will happen to me now. If the insulin is not working where do I got from here? I can't have metaformin as I have poor renal function and I only have one kidney I can't see any solution at the moment any suggestions at all would be helpful the diabetic nurse is ringing me today to let me know if her and the consultant have come up with anything

cut carbs and increase activity..............

working the muscles will decrease your insulin resistance and in turn will decrease your insulin intake.........

its a vicious circle insulin resistance as the more you weigh the more insulin you need, and the more insulin you put in, the more weight you put on......

i am no exercise expert myself as I am over weight purely down to my love of food........

whats a typical days food........? how much activity do you get?

Hi Anna,

You need to low-carb at Dr Bernstein advised levels; buy his book The Diabetes Solution and do what he says.

Try it for 6 months and see what happens; you have to follow it though it won't work nearly so well if you fudge it or if you think he can't be right about eating fat; he is. Give it a go.

Best

A typical day is bowl of cornflakes with skimmed milk for dinner either a ham sandwich or 2 bananas with 6 dates and a glass of coconut water made into a smoothie then for tea it will be either sweet potatoes with steak and salad or I will make some wedges with them and have gammon with them if I do have a snack after tea it will b an apple on the odd occasion I will have a piece of toast at night I go swimming 2-3 times a week

just be aware that as you follow a low carb diet to make sure and test really regularly as your insulin needs will hopefully go down as the body starts losing fat from the liver

your diet seems reasonable..............

so extra exercise would help.........

how is your basal doses?

can these be adjusted? ever little reduction in insulin will help.......

@Annaj I think you will see a huge difference if you follow what @novorapidboi26 and @Dillinger suggest regarding LCHF, obviously we are not doctors and maybe you have other health problems that contribute to your insulin resistance/weight but the carbs & sugary fruit you are eating won't be helping, I hope you get somewhere when you speak to your DSN, easier said than done but stay positive :)
