Insulin sensitivity

Hi all,

I have a quick question..

I have been on an insulin pump for about 8 years, never had any issues and my control has been great.

However, I've recently started doing exercise regularly (5 times a week, running circuit training and weights) and this has had a massive impact on my insulin sensitivity.

Before if I was to eat a certain meal and bolus 20 units of insulin everything would be fine, but now 10 units seems to be too much!

I now seem to have lost all control of my sugar levels and hypo quite often. My question is, should I now re-check my basal rates and re-calculate all the insulin/carb ratios, etc?

It's been a long long time since I did this and wondered if anyone has any step by step instructions on the best way?

Thanks

Craig

Always start with basal testing, then once that sorted tweak everything else one at a time. To many changes and you wont know what works and what doesn't.

Thanks, so I guess I need to pick a time slot and then make sure I don't eat 4 hours or so before then test every hour, something like that?

Ideally do a 24 hr fasting basal test, as you are on a pump so you will need to tweak each time slot on the pump. But yes, if your insulin sensitivity has increased - not unusual with a change in exercise - this will affect your basal too.

Note that after you reduce your basal you may find your bolus ratio needs adjusting back in the other direction.

Cheers guys very helpful! Not sure I could starve myself for 24 hours though I struggle to do 5 hours without food lol

I may get some more sensors for my freestyle libra as its great for seeing trends and may help with through the night testing of my basal rate

If you get your Libre working again that will be perfect.
