I was diagnosed with TYPE1 diabetes about four years ago - right out of the blue at 65 years old. I have been on a DAFNE course, and have used those tools to manage my insulin. My blood sugar control is excellent. However, I am now using 2 units of background insulin in the morning, and 10 units at night. I have virtually stopped using quick-acting insulin, except as a precaution when I go out for a meal when I use a ratio of 0.5 to 1 carb unit.
The problem is when I raise the issue with the diabetes professionals, they suggest I am still in denial, and do not really address the issue of where my carb intake is disappearing to.
I have a great example from the other day, which highlights the issue.
My 9am blood sugar was 6.3. I had a cracker and low fat cheese for breakfast ( 0.3CP). We then walked about 2.5 miles to a shopping centre, where I could not resist a SUBWAY ( about 4CP). I did not take any quick-acting insulin with this food. We then walked back (45 mins.) In the afternoon I went on the exercise bike for 20 mins., and tested my blood sugar after at 4.8. I ate some tortillas to keep me going (about 1CP), and then I had a roast duck, roast potato and mixed veg dinner, and I could not resist some home made Christmas cake laced with booze. I reckon my carb intake was at least 4CP, ignoring the veg. I again ignored any QA insulin, and when I tested again at 9pm after another 20 min. bike session, my reading was 5.0.
I cannot believe I am not producing insulin, but am too wary of ceasing any insulin input.
Anyone any thoughts on what is a fairly typical scenario, although in general I get the same level of readings on a much lesser carb intake.

Have you done a basal test to make sure your basal dose is right for you?

I test the basal impact every so often by using a zero carb input, and the levels at 2 units in the am and 10 units at night seem to keep my blood sugar well under control. I never register double figures of blood sugar - the highest being about 8.0. I can register 4.0 after exercise, but I have never experienced any hypo symptoms.
