Insulin Sites

Hi Everybody.

I've been a type 1 for just over 4 years. I'm on Novorapid and Lantus. I have always altered injection sites for my lantus , between both thighs and fatty parts of my legs , however I have only used my tummy to inject my Novorapid. What other sites are good to use , for me to inject Novorapid into ?

Many Thanks

I use alternate sides of my belly area I get my wife to do my Novorapid jabs in alternate upper arms. She also has the "pleasure" of doing my larger night-time jab in my backside. :)
Clearly the upper arms and backside are difficult to do yourself.

mrburden I'm glad to know it's not only me who has problems with injecting into arms and buttocks! I can only use injection sites I can reach with both hands, it's hard otherwise to hold the pen still and press the plunger with one hand.

With small needles (5mm or less) it is very easy to inject the upper arms by yourself, it's only a problem if you try to 'pinch' but there is no need to pinch with these needles. I was shown how to inject novorapid in my arms when I was in hospital so used that area for ages before I realised you could use other sites.
The preferred method for adults is the no pinch technique,
which has been found to be safe and effective with one exception:
very thin adult males (e.g. BMI <18kg/m2) that inject in
their outer thighs. Males in this category should change their
injection site if they want to use the 5 mm with no pinch, since
they may not have enough layers of fat on their outer thighs.
Patients may pinch up if they desire.

Recommended 5 mm
Needle Techniques in
Children
Children should use the 5 mm needle with or without
pinch-up.

I agree with Phoenix that the need to pinch with these small needles is not necessary, in all honesty I would have to go back to the days of using glass syringes when I last pinched my skin. That said if you find it easier then so be it, holding the pens with one hand and injecting does take some getting use to but can be done with practise. I'm afraid no amount of money would persuade my wife to stick a needle in my bum! :o

I always inject in my stomach and rotate the sites. I've tried my legs and my arms (never buttocks - no desire) but it seems to take too long to absorb in those areas, I end up getting frustrated at a hyper feeling, test bloods and find they are still high then inject more. Consequently having a hypo! I'd love to be able to inject in other sites, though. I now have lipohypertrophy in my stomach, which doesn't cause any pain but it's not the best looking or feeling thing in the world.

I don't inject QA insulin in the buttocks as this would be to slow, however I find that my Basal (lantus) insulin works just fine here and inject there most of the time.

Perhaps money isn't the thing to persuade her with... :)
Like you, I don't pinch but I do like to hold the pen with one hand and plunge with the other.
