insulin stacking

hi,
i've been reading through old posts and have come across the term insulin stacking a few times. i understand that its when you take a bolus dose to combat eating before a previous bolus dose has run out. does this mean that if i only had a snack and i still had insulin in my system i wouldn't necessarily have to take more insulin?
i always thought of insulin as being used up, so you have to match the amount of insulin to the amount of carbs, otherwise you would end up with high BS? :?

also i'm on novorapid, does anyone know how long that stays in your system for cos i've read a few articles that differ in the length of time?

i'm striving to get the best control possible so trying to find out as much as i can!

thanks

Naomi

For me NovoRapid will tend to stick around for 4-6 hours, but it does depend very much on your metabolism and what you;ve eaten, so best to check your blood sugar before injecting again. So if you've eaten something at 5pm and injected for this, then eat again at 8pm you may need to reduce the amount you inject at that time, maybe by around 25-30%. As I say this varies for each person so always check your blood sugar and reduce according to what works for you.

:D me too. The closer you're injecting the less you're going to need, but not by the same degree "per hour". Insulin activity can sometimes be viewed as having a half-life to some extent. For the scenario you mention, and if your snack is relatively small, you might reduced your insulin by around 50%, but the only way to be sure is see what happens to your blood sugar when you try it. Be careful though, NovoRapid is quite a fast acting insulin, and has been known to sneak up on me and whack me on the back of the head, in a manner of speaking! Sorry I can't be more specific :).
