Hi,
At the beginning of February my blood sugars started going up and they haven’t come back down since. I think it’s my sites but my diabetic nurse thinks that I’m not eating enough carbs so I increased my carbs, nothing has changed. Now she says that I’m eating to many carbs! I disagreed and said that I think it’s my sites so she is going to book me an appointment for her to look, appointment won’t be for another 2 weeks!! I don’t know what todo, my blood sugars are in the 20s / 30s and I’m really not feeling very well. Has anyone been though this?

There are many things which affect our blood sugars such as food, illness, drugs.

If my blood sugars are surprisingly high, I first check my insulin (change the cartridge and then the batch) and the insulin pen. If you have single use pens, this is the same as changing the insulin but, hopefully, you have reuseable pens and a spare one.

It is not surprising you are feeling unwell if your blood sugars are in the 20s and 30s, Do you have a way to test your ketones and sick day rules to follow?

Yes, that was my first thought to change the pen and I ordered some more incase it was the batch.

I have tested my ketones, they are between 0.1 and 0.4.

I’m just really confused as to what happens next

Have you tried adjusting your basal? If your basal isn't correct then your rapid acting won't work as it should, that is assuming you are on a basal/bolus regime? xx

Yes I’ve changed basal from 22 to 26, diabetic nurse said to go up to 30 now xx

Hi,

Facinating your nurse links an increased carb intake with lowering BG levels.. (It's not the first time I've heard that "therory" from one of my DSNs either..)
Your insulin should work regarding what you decide to eat with carful dosing.

Do you stay in that range all the time, with your meals?

Are you awair of correction doses & by how much a unit should lower your BG by?

Hi,
That’s what I thought too! and nothing has changed with what I’m eating.

I can go from eating something small say 10g carbs up to 150g carbs for a big meal. I just carb count, and that’s always been fine.

I am doing correction doses as well and it’s not bring my bs down. I was doing 1 unit bring it down 3 but have even changed that to 1 unit bring it down 2 now.

So I can be doing like 20units just for one meal, I feel like I’m just giving myself more and more but for what reason!?
