Insulin to prime your set question?!

When I have done a set change I need to prime it with one unit of insulin. (Not sure what it should be for the length of the set tube inside me but I always use 1 unit) Anyway, on my Animas pump there was an option to prime the set and that one unit wasn't counted as insulin on board for any future meals/calculations etc... So, with this Accu Check combo thing I've got how can I do this?

Say I need 1 unit to prime set and then 3 units for lunch the pump will think I have 4 units in me but I only actually have 3. Any ideas ? :?: :idea:

Am I missing something here. I probably am but would be nice to know.

I now use the Rapid D 6mm steel needle set and it's lovely. Has a really low profile so doesn't catch in yr clothes so can now put set in the side of my bum, in the top of my leg or use my tummy. If I had more meat on my arm, it would go in there as well but my arms are fairly slim now.

With steel needle sets you prime them first before you insert them so no need to use the bolus. I just connect a new set whenever and then the stop button on pump and then use the prime to get insulin to travel to the end of the set needle.

You could also do this as well if you wanted using the Inset II. Just put pump into stop mode and then ask it to prime 1u into the set.

Check your infusion set insert book (comes in every box) to what is the prime for your set, as differet sets/sizes of needle will have a different prime amount (mine for the tenderlink 13mm is 0.7)..

Easiet and best way of doing this is via your handset..

Is before doing your BG test for set change and/or meal, is to go to the bolus wizard enter the amount of carbs that corrosponds with the amount you need to prime, the wizard ask if you want to cotinual as you haven't taken a blood test say yes.. If you then want to to bolus for food, take the BG as normal..

This keeps everything separate both calculation wise, and for when you are looking at your results, as you can easily see what is a prime bolus, and what is a bolus for food

On my Animas there are two different things. Priming generaly takes 8-11 units of insulin to fill the tubing until there is a drop coming out of the end of the needle. Once you have instered the canula though you then need to refill that small end portion as the insulin will now be coming out of the canula rather than the steel insertion needle. As said this is stated in the documentation for the different lengths of sets, but the 6mm Insets that I use require 0.3u to refill the canula after the set has been fitted and the insertion contraption taken off.

I use flexilink...and need to prome the cannula with 1 unit. As I chane my sets at night, after my bath/shower, I just prime the lines, insert canula, and then just dial up a quick bolus of 1 ul.

As I am not going to eat for another 8 hours, this doesn't really impact the wizard into think that when I take my next bg, I already have 1 ul of insulin on board.

This workd for me, and I know, that if I look at any data, that 1 ul dose, at 9 pm, every 3 days is a cannula prime.

Would be nice if the pump had a cannula prime setting...but certainly not a major concern for me.
