Insulin Tresiba Degludec and side effects

Hi I'm new to the group but not new to type 1 diabetes which I've had for 23 years now. I've always struggled with keeping my sugers down and 3 years ago was put on a new long acting insulin tresiba - degludec which got my sugers stable which was amazing but I've had so many side effects now including a bad reaction to an anxiety medication, rapid weight gain which has caused me to gain 3 stone (put on over a stone within the first 2 months of being on it) and swelling in my lower legs when walking which was never an issue before I started taking this insulin and now I'm getting numbness and tingles in my hands. I was wondering if anyone else has had issues with this insulin? as I'm talking to my GP in a few days and I want to say I need to come off this insulin as all these issues are in the list of side effects. I have brought up concerns about the insulin and side effects with my GP and pharmacist before but I've not had much feed back from them.

If you read this and reply thank you.

Greg.

Have you read the document that comes with the insulin with regard to side effects.
I have done a quick google and seen nothing specific apart from weight gain but I think that is included on all insulin for those who experience insulin resistance.

Hi,

Welcome to the forum..

Regarding the weight gain. Has your diet changed, maybe finding yourself snacking more to keep BGs in range?

Hey I've recently got the freestyle libre and my sugers were going up at night I found so I increased the long acting dose and I've found out today that I've gained 12 pounds since I started using it mid May and I've been eating a lot less calories and carb foods as I had to sign a contract to get my surgers down to carry on getting funding for the freestyle libre.

I'm talking to my gp on Friday and I'm going to ask to change long acting insulin as I've gained 4 stone in 3 years since being on this insulin I never had this issue on levemir.

some people cant handle some of the newer insulins... i can not handle novorapid or fiasp.... i can manage for a few days.. but beyond that i get really bad headaches.. to the point i can not keep my eyes open.. but im fine with humalog

levemir i struggled with too.. so i thought initially it was something novonordisk add to the insulin causing it... but i was perfectly fine with tresiba..

all insulin will cause weigh gain, if you dont control what you eat, as insulin forces your body to use all the energy fro what you eat.. unneeded energy stored as fat... if tresiba is controlling your bg better than what you were on before its possible its forcing you to store the excess energy.. i say possible as there could be other reasons for it

only one way to find out if the tresiba is causing your other issues would be to revert to your old insulin for a couple of months, if the issues go away, and then return when back on tresiba, then you have your answer.. this is something you should discuss with your care team

An amazing reply thank you.

So I know insulin causes weight gain but I've never gained this much weight on other long acting insulins, it's amazing how different insulins react to other people. I'm 100% coming off this one after 3 years and 4 stone of weight gain.
